We have no friends or family where we currently live, thus my son is not getting a party or having any one over. Is anyone else in the same situation? How do you plan on making his/her day special without having anyone around?
We plan on using google hangout to have everyone watch him eat his cake. Any other ideas on how to make it special? I know he won't remember, I just feel guilty that there will be no fun pictures or anything for when he is older.
Re: Anyone else not having a birthday party/get together?
You can still take fun pictures! Take pictures of him in a party hat, opening his present, playing with the box, the smash cake, with a number one candle. Sing happy birthday all day long! Send his picture to news station when they show he first birthday babies or the newspaper. Make a handprint to keep...
DH will be out of town on DSs actual birthday, so it will just be the kids and me. I'm going to do funfetti pancakes for breakfast. Maybe a little photoshoot, a trip to the playground, food coloring in his bath.
We're in the same boat. DH's parents are here, but otherwise we don't have any other family or close friends. I think my parents will come up for the weekend since DD's birthday is on a Saturday. We'll probably have a cook-out or have everyone over for dinner and cake and ice cream. Then we're celebrating with my family when we go back to my hometown for Thanksgiving.
You can definitely do fun pictures. You can take him to a playground or the zoo, or even out to an ice cream or cupcake shop. If you have family and friends out of town, you could send them an "invite" and ask them to share a birthday wish with DS and then make a scrapbook with it. There are lots of things you can do. It's just about celebrating him and also you and DH for making it through the first year!!!
We have no family near us either, so I'm baking a cake for LO and we will probably go out for dinner, depending on when my H is home. So we may celebrate early, late or on her bday.
Then next week we are road tripping to where all our families are for a big birthday party.

We just moved closer to family and friends and we're still just doing a small get together with my dad and my sister. We could invite a bunch of people, but honestly, we're recovering from the move financially, so having a big party is just not a possibility right now.
I think it's just fine. He'll never remember. And we'll still get a good pic of him diving into that cake. That's pretty much the only thing you need to accomplish with a 1 year old's birthday party, right?
