Cloth Diapering

Diaper rash?

We've been CDing since we got home from the hospital and DD has had a persistent rash. I've been trying to change her every 2 to 3 hours or when she goes, and using cloth wipes moistened with water and slathering her bottom with Grovia magic stick. Just not sure what we're doing wrong. I made my own cloth diaper detergent, so I am curious if it could be that? As a FTM I don't even know how to deal with sposie diaper rash, let alone what could be the cause in cloth! Appreciate any advice.

Re: Diaper rash?

  • Newborns are rashy - I'm not familiar with the Grovia stick but we're using Earth Mama Angel Baby bottom balm and its really really good.

  • I second the EMAB, and I have just recently got my baby to minimal redness after dealing with diaper rashes (partly from my own mistakes) since switching to cloth a month and a half ago.  I also have not tried the Grovia stick, but I do know that my dd has a coconut oil sensitivity.

  • My little guy has had two different rashes already, I'll tell you what worked for me.

First rash was on the front, where his pee was collecting most.  It was a prickly heat looking rash.  I used lanolin on it and changed my washing routine thinking maybe there was detergent residue causing it. Now I do a cold rinse with a tiny bit of detergent, a hot wash and two extra rinses.  A lot, I know.  I use Charlies soap.   Either the lanolin or the extra rinsing or a combo of both cleared it up within a day or two.  It wasn't painful for him, just little red bumps.

The second rash was on the bum, it was a reaction to his constant pooping and was painful to him.  It was raw and red and scary looking.  I coated it with burts bees diaper cream and lanolin, alternating the two.  That one cleared up in a few days, but I'm still using the creams as a preventative now.

    hth!

  • I would try changing more often, like every 1-2 hours.  It could be wetness leading to irritation/rash.  If that doesn't help, I'd guess it's the detergent.
