Am I off my rocker... Clicky poll

My mom thinks that my daughter needs to be enrolled in kiddy cheerleading once she's old enough. I am NOT AT ALL keen on that idea, personally I feel jazz dance or hula would be better for her.

Would you put your child in cheer?

  • Not at 2-3, but elementary school age if she had an interest--sure.

  • I don't see the harm in it. I wouldnt push it, but I would see it more as a socializing opportunity. The same as swim class or tumbling.
  • Around here, DD can't start cheerleading until she's 4 or 5, but I will be enrolling her in dance at age 2 1/2.
I don't see anything wrong with it, as long as she wants to do it.

  • It totally depends on the program, your child's personality etc. etc.

I don't see the harm in cheerleading if you/she is into it.

The HS I work at, every winter the HS cheer team puts on a "camp" for toddlers. It's like 40 minutes a week for a month. They get some pompoms to twirl around, little matching sweatsuits and the girls teach them to scream the HS cheers. It's pretty cute, very low key, short, fun and no competition. Just for fun. I will sign LO up in another year when she's old enough.

I would not however do this if it was some big competitive, uptight competition. It's just for fun around here and a way for Moms to sit on a bench and read a book for an hour. :)

Everyone is different. That'll be the day I sign my kid up for dance. ;) Do what you feel is best.

I voted SS for this reason.

  • If the kid has an interest (watches cheer, talks about it, says she wants to be a cheerleader, etc.), then why not?  But I probably wouldn't pick that as an activity for a 2 year old, no.  I'd be more likely to pick a dance class personally.  I didn't even though they had cheerleading for two year olds!  Is it more a tumbling class or what?

  • Is it just me or are little girls pushed into stuff earlier than boys?  All of my friends' girls are starting things like ballet and gymnastics at age 2-3.  Obviously, a boy could do it too, but it just seems like people are so eager to get their girls into some sort of dance around here.  They don't wait until she shows an interest.  They just sign her up the day she reaches the age limit.  It's kind of silly to me.

  • It wouldn't be my first choice by any means. I feel like that is something to get into in high school. However, where we live there is slim pickings for toddler activities, so I'd consider it since it's something active to do.
