Cloth Diapering

Help!

So this is my first post as I just started CD 3 days ago. I'm already frustrated. DD has leaked through the sides onto the shells almost every time she's been in these diapers. She's on the smallest rise and I try to change her every 2 hrs. It's like the insert bunches up when she moves(she's over 15 lbs, but has skinny arms and legs) and I can't make it any tighter. The waist leaves a mark on her back but she doesnt seem uncomfy. Ive also tried making sure everything is lined up over her crotch and leg areas. Also, I washed all the inserts that were dirty today on hot and after drying they ALL still smelled like pee. I'm using ecos detergent filled to the HE line, and Calgon water softener bc we have very hard water here. I'm currently trying to rewash adding more detergent and a pre rinse. Any advice or help is welcomed!  I really want to cloth diaper but right now I'm confused and overwhelmed.

Re: Help!

  • I'm sorry things aren't going so well. :(

A few things, though, to help troubleshoot as it sounds like you have a few things going on:

    1. Were you previously doing a prewash/rinse? Prewashing/rinsing your diapers is a must to rinse out the ick so your detergent wash can do its job. If your diapers don't smell clean after you wash, they are not clean. Period. If a no detergent prewash plus a wash with ecos isn't cutting it, you should try another detergent. Other hard water peeps have mentioned success with Tiny Bubbles or Tide powder.

    2. What kind of diapers do you have? This will help determine any fit issues and/or if you have a brand that's known for being less forgiving with fit.

    3. Are the inserts soaked when you have leaks? And is it just leaking onto the shell or are you getting leaks onto clothing, bedding, etc?

  • We are using grovia hybrids so the liner snaps in. I'm inclined to forgive the leaks bc the shell has been catching it, so I haven't had a blowout or leak onto clothes. I can reuse the shell if it's slightly damp. I just rinse the pee out and air it. The grovia hybrids are supposedly the best for skinny babies so I figured they'd be our best bet.

Oh and I went back, did a cold pre rinse, then warm/cold with an extra rinse and more detergent like the grovia website suggested and it appears to have helped, the few inserts I checked smelled fresh.I'm thinking I'll also rinse the pee when I change the insert too. The only diaper that smells now is the fuzzibunz and mf insert, so I might wash those again today. My DD has always had strong urine, I think it's bc she's on special formula. Thank you!

  • We love our Grovia hybrids. My DD is 17 lbs and I'd say the fit on her is just now working out. Before, they were pretty big on her and without the proper fit the inserts would bunch up sometimes if not put on properly. If the insert is totally soaked you know they aren't absorbant enough or you're not changing enough. If the insert is partly dry and they're still leaking, they aren't tight enough. For the smell, be sure you're using enough detergent. Use the normal amount recommended for the size load you are doing. When you open the washing machine, you shold see LOTS of white suds! It will all rinse out, promise!

  • She was leaking out the top so I adjusted and now she seems to leak through the gussets. Or sides when it bunches. The leaks are usually small and contained by the shell. They are still not at full absorbency I guess bc they are still new and have only been washed 5-6x. They are pretty wet when I take them off at 2 hrs, but she's a heavy-ish wetter(worse at night) I'm hoping as she gets bigger this won't be as much of an issue. Even at just over 15 lbs, she has a teeny waist and thighs.

  • Oh and I have an HE front loader washer so it uses less water. I'm hoping the extra rinses and a bit more detergent will do the trick.
