For those back at work & pumping

Or STMs who've done it before. How's it going? Any advice or helpful tips?

Re: For those back at work & pumping

  • Extra set of flanges and a hands free bra. I can't imagine doing it without these.
I also don't wash my stuff each time. I rinse and put them in a Tupperware in the fridge for the next one. I wash and use the steam bags each night.
And if you're having trouble getting let downs have pictures or videos of LO to look at.

  • I'm only back part time...4 days a week and 4 hours a day...I nurse LO just before I leave and nurse as soon as I get back. I always pump in the morning and pump when I get back to replenish the BM that was bottle fed. I've been eating oatmeal and granola for breakfast and really helps with supply....It's been better than expected.

I will work 2 nights a week right when LO cluster feeds, I am wondering how often I should pump...

  • Honestly...

I teach and my breaks are limited.

I pump before I leave for school, at 12:00 if I have a break, and then when I get home and before bed.

Its very hard to pump in a school or classroom.

My supply has dropped and its frustrating.

If you can take breaks when you need them I think it would work better...

  • I'm a teacher too and my school actually provided a lactation room - I pump at 5:30 when I wake up, during my prep period (8:30) and during my lunch (12:30). My school actually provides a sub in my classroom in case pumping takes longer or if I have a meeting. Then I pump as soon as I get home.

Although I'm pumping frequently I still notice a drop in my supply - it's pretty frustrating.

As for helpful tips - bring a book or cell phone so you aren't bored (I really like the idea of bringing pictures of your LO - helps remind why you are doing what your doing). I also bring a granola bar and water.

  • Thanks! I'll be sure to bring water, a snack & pictures of DD for pumping. For those with supply issues, have you tried fenugreek? I think I will start using that if I notice drops in supply.

  • We have two bathrooms we can use... not happening. I use my classroom so I can use the computer while I pump since I don't get reception. I have not asked about a sub but I doubt it would happen...

I am using fenugreek. I take 4pills 3 times a day. I also just started something called More Milk plus

I tried fenugreek for a bit, however despite the slight increase in supply I found the urine smell so fowl that I had to stop. Even my LO's diapers stunk! I couldn't take the smell in the house so I made a decision to do other things to boost my milk and not take the remaining fenugreek that I started.

    And then there were three...

How many hours will you be gone for? I'm thinking feed her before you leave and right when you get back. For me, I only pump if I'm gone at least 6 hours. So far I'm only gone for 4 hours. When I get back my LO is usually fed, so I pump right away. I'm usually engorged. I get at least 6 oz. I also pump once in the middle of the night and one time after the first morning feeding to add to my stash.

I'm usually gone for 4 hours during the time LO cluster feeds as well. He's usually in bed by 7:30pm, but on the days I work,  I don't get back until 9pm. My mother watches him and feeds him a bottle. He doesn't go down until I get home. So therefore, when I'm not home, LO doesn't cluster feed (he eats every 2-3 hours) like how he normally would. As soon as I get home, I either pump right away or feed him, if he wants it. He's usually out as soon as he goes on the breast and will sleep a good stretch....I don't pump at work ...I get a little engorged but I'm home soon enough. It hasnt affected my supply. You could pump at work while you're gone, but I don't think LO will want/need to cluster feed when you're not there. hope this helps. But I would definitely nurse before you leave to work and after.

Federal law states your employers HAS to give you sufficient time (NOT breaks) to pump as needed with room to do it in that is not a bathroom. If my supply were suffering I'd definitely be talking to someone about a sub coming in the room for me so I can pump. I work in a prison where I also have to be relieved and can't just go take a break as needed.  It was a fight to get what I needed for it's for my LO so I'll do what I have to! Good luck!

  • It's going well.  I am away from DD for about 11 hrs/day.  I have been pumping 3 times/day.  So far, I have ended up with extra milk every day that I freeze.  DD drinks four 3-oz bottles while I'm gone.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
