Somewhere after age 1, we started leaving her with blankets in the crib, but they never stayed on. Even now, at age 22 months, they are often balled up underneath her by the morning. So we still have to dress her appropriately.

Dd started with a blanket at about a year. I found the blanket that stays on her the best is the one that came with her bedding set. It is a soft material but is a little stiff. It seems that she can toss and turn under it and it doesn't come off her easily. I've tried other blankets and they usually end up under her in a ball.
It depends on the kid I think. My 8 year old ends up un covered almost every night he's a very active sleeper. My nephew has stayed covered since 18 months but he covers his head along with his body.
