Diaper Rash? Open Sore?

Quick question, the past week we noticed our LO had some red spots on her bum. Of course we thought it was a diaper rash so we started to put Dextin on it to hopefully heal it.

But as time went on we noticed a couple spots weren't going away till one day I was lightly wiping and saw blood on the wipe. I freaked out of course, but was surprised she wasn't fussing. I read about using corn starch so we started applying that as well and sure enough one of the sores went away.

Unfortunately, two other ones did not and they seem to stick around. We kept using the corn starch/dextin until i one day i saw a good amount of blood from a wipe. We started to make sure to change her very frequently and though the bleeding seemed to stop the red area just won't go away.

Now we have an appt with the Ped next week but has anyone had this problem? The open sore and if so what did you use to help it heal quickly? Just air dry? I feel bad for my little girl. Just doesn't cry at all but i feel like the past few days while sleeping she will squirm and fuss and i swear it has to be from her bottom.

Re: Diaper Rash? Open Sore?

  • where on her rear is the sore? close to the rectum or on the cheek?

We use Mum Bub cream from Adan and Anais and it's like magic and smells great! If our little guy has an open sore from diaper rash or something it heals it in hours. We use it during most diaper changes to prevent irritation. Love it!
  • I noticed the open sore just inside her bum but i see little red spots on her actual rectum as well
  • We went through this for a couple days. The Pedi had us use water and a soft cloth instead of wipes and baby powder every diaper change. The Pedi said not to use diaper cream other than after a bath because it can make it worse because of the acidity and oils in EBF poo. It cleared up almost immediately when we made these changes.

  • Ds3 has had what you're describing for a few weeks.  He poops all.the.time so that doesn't help things.  I switched to chlorine free and alcohol free wipes and just try to pat the area when we clean him off.  Giving him time to completely dry between diaper changes has worked wonders for him.  I just put a burp cloth over him and let him lay there for a little while.  Then I throw some Desitin maximum strength on.  It's pretty much cleared up now.

  • I would avoid using anything but a warm wash cloth and just pat rather then rub.  If you can let her go with out a diaper every so often so air can get at it. Soaking her bottom in the tub may help a bit too and just make sure to dry her good.  I would avoid cornstarch as that can cause problems with yeast.  Lather her up really good with a diaper cream that contains zinc oxide and hopefully if it does not get better the pedi will give you a script.

  • DS had small sores on his bum as well. We started to pat him with the wipes versus rubbing and we also started to apply Butt Paste Max (40% zinc oxide). When you apply it, don't rub it in; treat it like cake icing. That cleared it up within 2 days. We use it every time we change him now, and he is completely diaper rash free!

  • We use Canus Lil Goats Diaper Cream. Smells good and is also 40% zinc oxide.  (don't use if LO has milk sensitivity or allergy).  Just make sure the rear is completely dry before you put anything on or you'll trap the moisture in.

  • What kind of diapers are you using? My daughter has the most sensitive skin on the planet (shes 2 now, just lurking around the boards). Even now, she gets open sore rashes now and again that are TOUGH to get rid of. Desitin is good for mild, red rash, but not for open sores. We use all natural corn starch on her after every change. Also, we never let her stay wet for more than like a minute at most. The moment she pees, shes changed and allowed to air dry. When she was about 4 months old she had a similar rash to what you described and we just put towels on the floor and let her be nude aside from some cornstarch. After a good week or two of that, it FINALLY cleared up. We only use the cornstarch when we see a rash starting, but if its clear, we don't use anything.

Also, we found through trial and error that the brand of diaper made a world of difference for her. Pampers are known to cause chemical burns in some babies with sensitive skin (we went through this with our baby). Finally, after going through all the usual brands, the only ones that she could wear were the Kirkland (costco) brand. Kirkland also has some natural wipes that are AMAZING. No fragrance, dyes, or unnatural anything in them. :) If the rash is persistent, it very well could be the diapers. Or even the type of soap you use when you bath her. Try and natural gentle soap, or even no soap at all for a while and see if that helps.
