Diaper Buying question

Hi Ladies!

I heard somewhere, goodness knows where, that if I buy a package of diapers every time I go to the grocery store while I'm pregnant (15 weeks today), by the time we have the baby we'll have a good stock built up and it will ease the financial stress of diaper buying.

Is there any merit in this? Has anyone done it before?

Re: Diaper Buying question

  • I think that sounds like a good idea in theory, except you never know what size your baby will start out in and how long they will stay in that size. You may end up wasting a lot if you buy too many of the wrong size. I have bought a couple newborn and size 1 packs, but am going to wait before buying too many more.

  • I had a friend load a gift card with the cost of a pack of diapers every time she went to the grocery store.  Then once the baby was born she used the gift card each time she needed diapers- and only used the card for diapers.  The card lasted several months before they had to use "real" money to buy diapers.  Its something we are starting to do now!
  • I was about to ask this same exact question! I had heard this as well, and since we have a membership to BJ's (which I assume has the same bulk section as Sam's and Costco) I wanted to get a head start to try and make things easier once LO is here.

I have an additional question, if there is merit in stocking up in advance how did you decide how much of each size to stock up on? Was there a brand or style that you stuck with? I know with bottles they say LO will try different ones until they get one they like, is this similar for diapers?

Sorry to add all the question OP, didn't want to hijack the thread, just wanted to add a few questions :)

  • Hi ladies!

    Just my 2 cents... :)

Our BIL and SIL hosted a Pampers and Poker party for us prior to our DD's arrival. We were super lucky to get a TON of diapers. And yeah we had far too many in a few sizes but I am just saving them for the next LO! So if you over buy in a size, don't worry if you plan to have another LO at some point you will use them. Or they can always be given away as a gift or charity.

I think this is a good idea. Plus some diapers just don't work for some babies. Like you think you're a huggies family, but they end up leaking all the time. And pampers work better. Or the other way around.

I would suggest having a box or two of newborns and then just start a diaper fund. Be it a jar of cash or a giftcard.

This. Plus, shop around for the best prices.  I get all of my diapers from Amazon, and its cheaper than Sam's club even.

  • I think this is a great idea!  With DD, we got a ton from our shower and I had to trade them in for a different size or a different brand that we stuck with.  Wal-mart lets you trade them for a different kind.  They will not let you get money for them.  They will just let you trade diapers for diapers.  same with formula.

  • The only thing I will say is - you're not going to know which diapers you like, and which ones work on your LO with the least amount of blow outs until after he or she comes...  I'd hate to have a ton of one kind and not like them.

Most stores will let you exchange a box of diapers for a different size even if you don't have a receipt.

We did this but just bought a couple boxes each month starting about halfway thru so we probably had a stock of about 8-10 boxes by the time DS was born. I bought half newborn and half size 1 and think I actually had to go get another box of newborn ones before I could start using the 1's. I <3 Pampers Newborns because they are so soft and delicate on baby's skin but once DS could go to bigger diapers I found Target brand to be almost identical to Pampers for half the price and have been using them ever since!

  • Only thing about the giftcard is that the grocery store might not be the cheapest place to buy them.

Here's what I discovered:  I loved Pampers when LO was size 1 & 2 b/c it has a stripe that tells you if they've peed.  Sizes larger than that didn't offer the stripe.

I had thought I'd only be a Pampers mom, but turns out not so. Also an awful lot of people on the bump talked about diaper burn (not rash but a chemical burn) from the Pampers Dry Max. Once I heard that I really stopped believing in name brand.

Other bumpies kept swearing by Target brand, which I found to be just as good as Pampers.  So much so that I wound up getting a Target Red Card so I could save 5% every time.  I also discovered (as he got bigger & drank more & more) that the only overnight diapers that didn't leak were Huggies overnites.  So daytime for Target & night time is Huggies.  So you never know & I know lots of moms who've said similar.  You might even like Costco or whatever.  I think you should take that money & put it into a shoebox.  If you do put it on a grocery card just realize that you might just have 5 months (the countdown is on)  of getting a break on your grocery bill which isn't so bad anyway.

  • Agree with the gift card idea!  One of my awesome family members gave us a $300 gift card just for diapers with DS - it was the greatest gift ever!  DS was allergic to some brands, so I'm glad I didn't stock up.  I agree with one person who said you never know how many of which size you will need too.  We used newborn size for exactly one week before going to size 1's and he was in size 3's for a very small amount of time before going up to 4's!

    This!!

I already have numerous different brands of different sizes but I also coupon so most of the packs I've barely paid a dollar or two for. If your unsure about which brand diapers to go with start stocking up on wipes. You can NEVER have too many wipes. My favorites are the Pamper Softcare and I get them shipped for pretty cheap through Subscribe & Save and my Amazon Mom acct. I still am using them for my youngest and just increased my shipments so I'll have a huge stash by the time this LO is here.
