Anyone supplement with Vitamin D?

We just went to the pedi for our 1 month check up.  Since LO is EBF the pedi recommended that we give LO a vitamin D supplement 1X a day.   Do any of you give your LO vitamin D supplement?  If not, why not?

Re: Anyone supplement with Vitamin D?

  • Yes, we give vitamin d per our ped's recommendation. If I give a bottle of formula that day, I don't give it.

  • Yep, we give it once a day. That's a pretty standard recommendation. Breast milk isn't terribly high in vitamin D. The easiest way to get it is through sunlight, but since infants don't typically get a lot of sun, a supplement is considered by most to be a good idea.

  • i don't, but i do try to make sure to get DD out in the sun for ~15 minutes per day, which is pretty easy since i'm out with DS. did the same with DS and his level was fine!

  • At DS's 2 week appointment, the nurse mentioned that the pediatrician would want us to start Vitamin D drops when DS is 2 months old unless he was drinking at least 17 oz of formula a day.

One bottle of formula doesn't have enough vitamin D in it. I believe 22 oz of formula has the full vit d amount.

  • We do based on our pedi's recommendation, and we started it right after his 2 month checkup.  DS actually doesn't seem to mind the taste of it, but our pedi also said we could put the vitamin D drops into one of his bottles if we gave him a bottle that day, so I'll probably do it this way when he's taking bottles every day at daycare.

  • We do.  We use the Carlson's drops.

Our pedi actually did NOT tell me we should be giving it, even though she knows DD is EBF.  I asked if I should be.  She told me that it was up to me.  That the cases of rickets in children are so extremely rare that she doesn't think it is a big deal.  We live in the PNW, so it's not exceptionally sunny, but this was still her stance.  She also said that there was no reason NOT to use the vitamin if I wanted to, so we chose to just to err on the side of caution.

  • My pedi never suggested we give vitamin d to DS. We live in Southern California so he gets plenty of sunshine. All he needs is a few minutes each day. Here's a link regarding vitamin d:

  • We supplement with Vitamin D (Enfamil D-Visol) per our pediatrician's recommendation.  It's sunny where we live, but since both DH and I are very sun sensitive we're being very careful with LO getting sun since he cannot wear sunscreen.  I pump a bottle for DH to feed LO everyday so I just dose that with the Vitamin D and LO has no problem.
  • My pedi said to take him for a walk everyday or play in a room with the blinds open for Vitamin D.  I did not even know they had supplements!  I am also concerned with the sun because I am very sensitive and he can't wear sunscreen yet, so I normally walk early before 9 AM or after 5 PM weather permitting.
