Baby's position

I'm terrible at figuring out what position the baby is in.  I am clueless!

Last week at an ultrasound he was breech.  I know they can move a ton and be one way one minute and a complete different position the next.

So, if I feel hiccups real low and lots of kicks and/or punches real low.... does this mean he's head down?

I feel a lot of movement near my hip bone, but hiccups practically in my crotch.

Re: Baby's position

  • I would like to know this, too. I haven't felt any movement above my belly button (usually it's "bad touch territory" low). At my last appt., the OB said she thought he felt head down, but she couldn't tell for sure. I don't get another u/s, so I have no idea what the little dude is doing in there.

  • I can feel where Bean is most of the time, though it helps if I lie down for a little bit so she gets moving.  Lately she's been head-down, so I can't feel her head (it's too low), but I can feel her back, and tell that she's kicking up by my belly-button.  The kicks are different depending on which way she's facing.  I feel her grabby little hands down by my cervix, and sometimes she flat-out head-butts it.

FWIW, I feel hiccups everywhere... like baby thunder.

  • I don't think I can feel my LO nearly as much as the rest of you can. I feel some general shifting occassionally and frequently kicks or hits.  But a lot of the time those are fairly soft too.  I don't think I've felt any hiccups, although I've been on the look-out.  Should I be worried?  (I'm a FTM)  She's had a strong heart rate at every appt. thus far.  I've been feeling her since about 18 weeks, and she's gotten stronger, but nothing like what you guys are describing.

  • All the movement I feel is below the belly button. At my last US, 6 weeks ago, she was breach so I assume she is still in the same position. I found the website spinningbabies.com helpful. They have a section where you can "map" the baby according to movement. If I go by that then she is in the same position. According to them the kicks are much stronger than punches so stronger movement indicates where the legs are.

  • I can't tell either. I always ask when I have an ultrasound.

  • I'm a high risk STM & just had another growth u/s yesterday & it was confirmed that baby is head down.  Almost all of the movements I feel are way down low & yest the tech told me that basically he has squished all of himself down low together, almost in half (his feet were blocking some of the measurements for his head!).  When baby hiccups it's a very light touch & I feel it in my lower abdomen. So I'm guessing (obviously) but if you're mostly feeling movement down low, particularly the hiccups, then probably baby is head down.  With my first, towards the end of pregnancy (which was only 32wks that time) the doc was able to feel my belly and confirmed that baby was head down.  So I would definitely think this is a question your doc could answer for you at your next appointment.
  • i can never tell either. occasionally i'd feel her feet. but other than that, no. i can't tell which is the head or her butt.

  • I wish I could tell!! I knew he was turned around (as in not facing my belly) because for about 5 days all the kicks I felt were directed inward, and nothing moved my belly. He's back to normal now and kicking my hands when they are on my stomach, but I can't tell if he's head up or down. I tend to think head up because I feel sometimes like he's about to kick his way out of me (Happened when I was driving last weekend - super awkward feeling like he was literally about to stick a foot out of my vagina!) and most movement is felt 'below the belt'. But then I get confused because sometimes when I wake up my ribs hurt SOOOOO bad and my friend said he might be kicking them when I'm sleeping. Does he turn around at night or something? I don't know. Right now he's hiccupping and it feels lower than normal, so perhaps he's head down.

    I give up! :)

  • I know from ultrasounds that the head is low and baby is diagonal with feet by my belly button. Sometimes baby moves and lays across my belly but lately I've been feeling hiccups by my pubic area. It's crazy because it feels like baby has tumbled and flipped in there but a few minutes later it decides to go down low again.
