Thirsty 24/7

Hi! Is anyone else extremely thirsty? I am so incredibly thirsty all the time. I've read that it can be a sign of gestational diabetes, but I am pretty sure that isn't the case for me. At least I hope not. I do tend to eat a lot of salty foods, but no more than usual I don't think. Just wanted to see if anyone else is having the same problem. :)

Re: Thirsty 24/7

  • I've never had that with any of my pregnancies. I would get your blood suger tested to be on the safe side.

  • I am also drinking a lot more water lately, although not what I would consider "excessive".
  • I'm thirsty a lot. Reminds be of breastfeeding. Instant thirst.

  • I've been extremely thirsty since before my BFP.  I read that it has to do with increasing blood volume.  Before getting pregnant, I tended to hover near dehydration, so I figure that is part of the reason for my thirst!

  • From what I understand, our vascular systems stretch out in early pregnancy to accommodate all the extra blood. This makes us crave salt and water (so we can fill those new big veins). I read this in one of my books - can't recall which one right now, but it made sense to me and also explains why I am burning more calories (per my heart rate monitor) when I'm doing a normal workout at 75% of what I did pre-pregnancy.

  • Increased thirst is definitely just a symptom of pregnany.  Before getting pg I rarely drank much fluids throughout the day, now I am gulping water like it's going out of style (and peeing more often too!!)  Totally normal.

  • All of the above! I have a jug that I got to try increase my water consumption when i was trying to loose weight before getting pg. It can hold exactly 8 -8oz cups of water. It use to take me most of the day to finish it. Now I can finish it at least twice a day. Sometimes I can get 3/4 of it done while watching TV at night, but have learned the hard way that even though my body craves/needs the water, my bladder is still the same size :(

  • I was very thirsty up until m/s kicked in at 6.5-7 weeks. Now water repulses me. You are also supposed to increase your water intake when you become pregnant anyhow.

  • I feel thirsty a lot too! I always have a drink handy (mostly water).
  • Yes I'm thirsty all day too.  I have a huge stainless steel water bottle that I refill and drink from through out the day... before I was pregnant I would drink 2 of them and be fine, but now I'm drinking at least 3 of them and still thirsty.  Which sucks because I'm still drinking water at like 8:00 at night and waking up 3-4 times a night to pee.
