Is This Normal?

My LO is now 5 months old and has been sleeping through the night - usually 7:30pm-7:00am - since she was about 2 months.  In the beginning I would leak alot but now I don't  really leak anymore.  But my breast are as hard as rock in the morning.  If she wakes up before me and I haven't had a chance to pump first, there is no way I can feed her.  I have to hold her off until I've pumped.  There is no way she could latch and I'm afraid she'd choke!  Is this normal to be so engorged in the mornings?

  • I had the same problem until DS started taking solids.  Even though I thought there was no way he could eat until I pumped, he did fine.  By 5 months, he was old enough to handle the faster flow in the morning, and I didn't need to hold him off so I could pump.  It might be worth trying to let your LO try and nurse instead of holding her off.  If you're worried, try manually expressing or pumping just enough to allow her to latch better.

  • Yes very normal but you'd be surprised what they can latch to and not choke on. As long as you pump your body thinks you need the milk. Maybe try pumping before you go to bed so morning is easier and you can build a freezer stash.
