Breastfeeding

Night time feeds

How do you get throught the night time/ early morning feedings? DS is 2 1/2 weeks old and I experience extreme guilt when I wake up with the grumps and can hardly stand to diaper a screaming baby and keep awake through a feeding. It's not always like that, some nights are a little harder than others and some nights my patientce is a little more durable. Any advice for a FTM?

Re: Night time feeds

  • I'm a Ftm too and my dd is only 7 weeks, so I'm no expert, but just know that what you are feeling is perfectly normal and doesn't make you a bad mom. Breastfeeding is hard work and when your body is trying to recover and you are not getting much sleep, anything and everything can be difficult. Just know that you are doing the best thing possible for your baby and eventually your LO will start sleeping longer stretches and you will get a much needed and deserved break. Best wishes!

  • It was pretty rough for me in the beginning. I was very cranky waking up every two hours, and at 2 1/2 weeks I didn't quite have breastfeeding down pact yet. It still hurt really bad and I actually dreaded putting him on the boob. Don't feel quilty, being grumpy in the middle of the night is inevitable and it gets easier. Now, I just feed LO in bed by laying him on his side, and I'm able to get to him before he starts to get hysterical. So, I never have to deal with the screaming.

  • DS doesn't scream when he is waking to feed, it's just the diaper change. He hates it. There are very few diaper changes we go through where he isn't throwing a fit! He gets diaper rash super easy so I am hesitant to leave it for even a little bit which often leads to two or more diaper changes at every feeding.
  • Don't beat yourself up. My kids are 6w and I'm still grumpy and tired when I have to get out of bed to nurse them tandem. If only one of them is hungry we do sidelying and I sleep through most of it. If that's an option for you, I highly recommend it.
