Heeelp....I have a biter!

DD (7months) popped her two bottom teeth a couple of weeks ago and has since been biting me A TON! I tried tapping her nose and saying NO - but she just laughs at me.

Any other suggestions? I still try to nurse but after the 5th or so time she bites down, I resort to pumping and feeding.

argh!

Re: Heeelp....I have a biter!

  • I was getting bit when I was trying to feed him and he wasn't hungry. An actively eating baby can not bite - he was getting me when I was distracted and didn't notice he was done. So that's my first advice - feed only when she's hungry, pay attention, and don't try to use the boob as a distraction (which I did all the time when he was smaller).

If you do get bit, put her down and stop the feed. Say "no biting". Withdraw attention for a few minutes. Then if you think she's hungry, try again.

  • I agree with PP--watch for cues that your LO is finished with the feed.  When my DS started biting, he was ready to switch sides or full.  If he did bite, I'd pull him into my breast to make him let go.  Once he bit, we were finished with feeding.  I'd say "You bit Mommy, so that tells me you're finished."  He got the idea pretty quickly that if he didn't want to be put down, then biting was a bad idea.

  • What a pretty little girl! Gorgeous.

I'd pull her into the breast when she bites (make it a bit uncomfortable to eat/breathe); she should let go. Then do what PP suggested; put her down and don't continue to feed. Let her know it hurts. She should get cause and effect pretty quickly.

    Good luck!
