Clomid while BFing

We started TTC #2 about a month ago. My daughter just turned one at the beginning of August and I am still breastfeeding her. I believe in baby lead weaning so I plan to BF as long as she would like. We used Clomid to conceive her due to my irregular ovulation. We plan to give it a go with no meds for a few months but plan to start Clomid in November if no BFP by then. I was at my OB yesterday and asked her about Clomid while BFing and she wasnt sure. She had never had anyone in the same situation so she said she'd have to do some research and let me know. Surely I am not the only woman out there in this situation.

So, any other ladies out there who used Clomid while BFing? Or wanted to and be told no by your OB/RE?

I do not want to wean my daughter early to conceive #2, but I also dont want a large age gap between my kids. We'd like to have 3 so the clock is ticking icon_smile.gif

Also, FYI my cyles returned 9 mo. PP and are anywhere from 41-28 days so for all intents and purposes things are working in there...

Re: Clomid while BFing

  • From kellymom:

I have had problems with infertility in the past; should I wean before treatments?

If you?re eager to become pregnant first steps may include charting some cycles or reducing breastfeeding to evaluate your fertility status. If you are not ready to try to conceive, though, you may do well to take precautions since fertility reversals do occur.

Although there is no direct research, there is no obvious reason to believe that fertility treatments would harm the breast milk. To find out the latest on how a particular drug affects breastfeeding, turn to Thomas Hale, MD?s Medications and Mothers? Milk. Clinical observations suggest that Clomid (Clomiphene) is compatible with breastfeeding.2 And there is no reason to expect that breastfeeding would affect your fertility treatment because the drugs will control your cycle.3

  • I'm not breastfeeding yet, but I'm pretty sure my RE told me that breastfeeding and fertility meds are not a good combination. You might also want to find an RE to monitor you (blood work, u/s) during your Clomid cycles, especially if your OB doesn't have ample experience with Clomid.
