Caffeine and unhappy baby?

Have any of you coffee drinkers noticed a change in your baby's behavior when consuming caffeine?  My LC said caffeine was ok.

My 6 week old has been much more fussy lately in the evening, and I'm wondering if it has to do with my drinking a very large iced coffee during the day as well as a couple cans of diet coke?

I have cut out the caffeine to see if she she is less fussy, but I'm wondering if any of you have experienced this?

  • I don't think cutting the caffeine is a bad idea (you're probably getting more than the recommended minimum of 300mg per day), but a lot of babies experience fussiness in the evening, it is completely normal, so the caffeine might not actually be the problem. Also, consider that at 6 weeks LO is probably due for a good growth spurt; that could be contributing as well. Give it a try though!

  • There's a post about this a few threads down, so check that out.  It may not be the caffine at all, and my just be regular evening fussiness.  There's also a growth spurt around 6 weeks so that may be causing it.

I drink 1 latte a day.  If you are drinking a large coffee plus sodas, it could be more than your LO can handle, so if all else fails, try to cut back for a few days and see if it makes a difference.  (Although at the end you say you cut it out, so did it work?)

  • I gave up coffee at 7 weeks with great resistance. It took 5 days to notice an increase in sleeping and decrease in fussiness. It's been 7 months now and I still can't drink it. : sigh oh well....

  • 6 weeks was the peak point of fussiness for both of my boys, so I doubt it has anything to do with the caffeine.
  • I have just now been able to drink caffeine without it affecting dd, but only before noon.most people seem to have no issues but dds behavior was greatly changed by caffeine
  • If you do your research, you'll find many studies that find that babies cannot process/eliminate caffeine like adults. Therefore, it may be causing your LO to get fussy. It happened to me. I backed off and went back to decaf and gradually increased the caffeine over a few m months. I'm now up to half caff at 4mo and LO is just fine with it. I could prob do full caffeine but I'm ok with half caff for now.

If you try n caffeine for a few days and then caffeine one day and you see a noticeable behavior change- you'll know what it is. Just try a little experiment to see- LO will be ok :)
