FTM - need advice on bottles

Hello,

I am due early November and am currently reading into the whole breastfeeding thing. At first, I was just set on formula (I lacked much knowledge) but now am dead set on breastfeeding. The thing is, eventually I will go back to work and I will have to pump the milk and make bottles for daycare. Which is where I need some advice.

What type of bottles do you purchase at the convenient store? Are there type of bottles or nipples I should stay away from?

  • I'm not sure, but I think by the convenient store you mean a convenience store? I wouldn't buy any bottles from a conveniece store. If you will eventually need to go between bottle and breast, you should get breastfeeding friendly bottles, which aren't sold at convenience stores. Breastflow, Tommee Tippee, and Avent's new natural bottles are all good choices. I haven't tried the Avent bottle as it is new, but seems nice. My dd wouldn't use Breastflow, but does very well with Tommee Tippee. Since you won't know what kind of bottle your LO will like, I would suggest getting 1 or 2 bottles of 2 or 3 different kinds of bottles. When you know which ones are preffered, you can stock up on that type.

  • So you've probably heard by now in relation to a lot of things "every baby is different."  This holds especially true for bottles.  Some babies will only take a certain kind of bottle and refuse all others, so don't stock up now on any specific brand.

The best bottle for your baby is the one your baby will take - as simple as that.  If you're breastfeeding, you'll find that a "slow flow" nipple works best, to help maintain the breastfeeding relationship.  This is usually the level 1 nipple that comes with most bottles, however "slow" is different for each brand, so you'll have to experiment with those too.  Ideally, it should take your baby as long to eat from the bottle as the breast, but that's rarely the case.
