Hey mamas, I have only been lurking a little recently, so I miss you guys!
Jack spiked a 103.2 fever today and has me worried. He has only been sick a couple of other times and this is the highest fever he's ever had. I talked to a triage nurse who told me that I shouldnt really worry unless the fever gets to 105, which sounds ridiculously high to me. But I realize that it is probably a viral thing and there is nothing they can do.
She told me I give him some acetaminophen and monitor his temp. Which would be fine, except that when I take his temperature he acts like I am murdering him and I fear that I am scarring the kid emotionally.
I normally take his temp rectally, and I tried doing it under his armpit, but either way it is the end of the world, and very stressful for both of us!! Any tips / recommendations for an easier way to do it?
I used to be a big deal. Now I'm just old.
Re: Temperature taking
We have a temple thermometer - you hold it on one spot on their forehead for about five seconds. We always sing the alphabet and we get to H before it beeps. It seems very reliable temp wise. We all use it. Got it at walmart.
Motrin works better for us! Hope he gets to feeling better soon!
I've been thinking about you. Glad to see you around. We have an ear thermometer that gives the temp as soon as you put it in his ear. If getting another thermometer isn't an option, try distracting him with Elmo (or whoever he loves). Take Elmo's temp first to show Jack that it's ok.
GL and hope he feels better soon.
Oh and the 105 is pretty standard for them to say not to worry until then. It probably is viral
I totally tried the Elmo trick, but on daddy instead. Well, with the armpit anyway, not the rectal one. Haha We tried everything we could think of. He was still super stressed out over it.
Eta: ugh, can make hearts or smileys on the mobile site!
we have this one too works great without a fight!
I hate the mobile site.
I'm actually doing really well. Idk if it's because I'm so busy or if it's the emotional healing process but either way I'm definitely getting better and I've finally fully recovered physically.
How's J this morning?
Under arm is really inaccurate - especially if they're not laying still. We still do C's rectally, but mostly because when he spikes a fever, he spikes a FEVER. His record is 105.6.
Basically, all you can do is try to distract him - ya know, normal toddler stuff. Try to find a thermometer that has a 5 second read or something so you're not waiting and waiting and waiting. A full minute is an ETERNITY.
Good luck! I hope he feels better soon!!

We also have it and love it. I have honestly never taken his temp rectaly, and only underarm when he had a high fever once (high fever for him was 102.6). We did the combo of acetaminophen and ibuprofen to break the fever and it worked great. Sorry I'm no other help with the temp taking... GL!
I think rectally is the most accurate. I wanted one of those temporal thermometers, but all the reviews I was reading complained about accuracy, so I never got one.
I would just keep trying to distract him. Give him a toy or let him watch a video on your phone. That's what I do regularly with DS during a normal diaper change. He is always fighting me. One of the easiest things to entertain DS is a new diaper or a wipe to play with.
We have this Safety 1st three-in-one thermometer. Rectal reading takes about 5 seconds. G doesn't like it but we just count, and by the time it gets to 5, it's over.

It also has different sensors, so you can take temp rectally, orally, or under the arm, and the thermometer can sense which tip is on.
Sorry Jack has a fever.
G has had some spikes to 103.5 or so, once with HFM and the other time, we think it was just teething. Hope he feels better soon!
Hope J is feeling better soon!
C's home for the second day in a row sick. I don't think he's got a fever any longer but I was to check just to be sure. Every time I'd being the rectal therm near him, he'd yell and alligator roll and I was even bribing him with the "emergency" Smarties from our first aid kit! So, no dice, I gave up. ** Runs off to buy an Exergen on Amazon. **
I had been trying to distract him with my phone and books and stickers, etc, but nothing worked. He cries like, "How could you do this to me?!" It's this awful, sad, disappointed, horrified cry that breaks my heart.
We almost tried this last night! I think that would be better for all of us, and the most accurate. I'm tempted to go get a temporal thermometer, but I worry about accuracy. It's nice to know that the over the shoulder method is easier!
This too. Our record is 105.5.
One thing that is good though, is if he is fighting, it means that he is well enough to fight. When A had that 105.5, he just laid there like a little rag doll
Our rectal is pretty fast though...just about 20 seconds, I would estimate. I think it's a Safety First...
