Cloth Diapering

baby oil?

Hi. I use bumgenius dipes on my lo. I decided to use a wipe solution we've just been using water and wash cloths so fards is 6 months on Sunday. Lots of solution recipes call for a little baby oil, but I don't want to screw with the diapers' absorbency. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this? TIA!

Re: baby oil?

  • I just use water... definitely wouldn't risk using baby oil...maybe someone else can chime in with a recipe...

  • I use Homestead Baby Wipes Companion - it has witch hazel, tea tree oil, orange oil/lavender oil, emu oil... and a couple other things, can't think of them at the moment. So the emu oil... it is very moisturizing and has healing properties, I believe. You could easily substitute some almond oil if you were to make your own. I do not like baby oil for anything... it is mineral oil, but they never list what minerals are in it. I feel like it is often petroleum based, which is scary, since that clogs skin instead of moisturizing.

  • I use a solution with a little baby oil and haven't had any absorbancy issues with my prefolds.  I do wash the wipes in a separate load of laundry, just in case.  I don't think the oil gets on the diaper from just wiping, but I don't want to risk it getting into the wash water.
  • Also, like PP, I don't use J&J baby oil (mineral oil).  I have used Burt Bee's baby oil and also Earth Baby Mama, which are made of different oils.  Not sure if that makes a difference.
