Top of nipple pulled out more than bottom?

Hi ladies,

I am working on weaning my 2 month old baby off of the nipple shield (flat/inverted nipples). When he comes off the breast the top of the nipple is pulled out more than the bottom. If the latch is fairly comfortable (just a bit "pinchy") and he's getting enough to eat, is this a concern? Could it be causing long term damage?  Is this what they mean by "lipstick nipple?"

I read that it could be due to a shallow latch, I'm doing my best to make sure he has a wide open mouth, getting lots of aureola, etc.

We've been nipple shield free for 2 weeks and it's most pronounced on the side that was more inverted.

Thanks :)

  • I'm curious about this as well, because my nipple looks a little like this too.

  • This is what mine was looking like and the top part was extremely raw and painful. I don't have flat or inverted nipples, but LO was starting to not latch, and the LC gave me a nipple shield to use because the baby had not eaten in MANY hours and I was desperate. Things are a bit less painful with the shield but I am so sad that I have to use it.

  • This sounds like your LO doesn't have the whole nipple in evenly.

Once your LO is latched I would try pushing down on his chin and at the same time pushing your breast further into his mouth to get a deeper more even latch.  This is what my LC had us do.

    Good Luck!
