Lurker...coming out with a question :)

Hi ladies, I have posted a few times but most of the time only have time to read, not post something.

Anyway, today we had to take Elliott to a peidiatric plastic surgeon to address the "flat spot" on the right side of his head.  We hadn't noticed it, however his doctor pointed it out this past Saturday at his 6 month check up.  The doctor today said that she rates kids on a scale of 1-6 with 6 being the worst and he is a 3.  So he now has a little blue helment to wear 22 hours a day.

At first I felt really bad about it because I blamed myself, but he didn't always lay on that side and I kept him turned, so I wasn't sure what happened. But the doctor today said that it may have come from the way he laid when I was pregnant, or from him dropping several weeks before he was born (I had to be induced).

Good news is he didn't mind it all! He's just fine with it. I think it bothered me having it put on more than it did him. Anyone here have any experience with helments like this?

  • Welcome! Big Smile

I'm no help on the helmet, but I wanted to say hi!

  • I don't have any personal experience, but one of my best friends went through this with her DD.  She had to wear a helmet from about 8 or 9 months until she was a year old.  Her head is fine now at almost 3 and she also didn't mind wearing it.  The same friend actually has a 4 month old son now as well, and his head is really flat on one side.  She was really disappointed that this happened again, but he will definitely need a helmet when he's a little older because the asymmetry is severe.  Because of the good experience she had with DD though she is not worried about going through it again.  She did say that they would 'cheat' and take the helmet off for special occassions, etc.

My son has a slight flat spot on the back of his head, because he was super stubborn as a newborn and refused to sleep anywhere but the back of his head when he wasn't sleeping on us.  The good news is the pedi said his head is symmetrical and he won't require any intervention...his head should 'round out' as he grows and becomes more mobile.

    Good luck!
