Supply slowing down with 6.5mo

My little gal (6.5 months old now) has been on breastmilk only since day one. I had built up a freezer stash before going back to work at 5 monhts. Lately I've noticed my supply is dipping.

I used to pump 15-18 oz a day at work, but now I get 12-13 max. At the same time she went from 15 oz of milk in bottles at daycare to 18 oz a day at daycare. So- most days I'm having to use a few ounces from the stash. At this rate I will be thorugh my stash in another month and she'll only be 7.5 months.

I eat oatmeal, drink at least 1 litre of water a day and am on fenugreek as of the last two weeks.

If my supply dips further I'll have to give her something else other than BM- what do you do? Formula (which I wanted to avoid), milk, solids? I just don't know.

Re: Supply slowing down with 6.5mo

  • Both the WHO and the AAP recommend starting solids at 6 months, so I'd say that would be your best bet if you want to add some more calories.

  • Also, about avoiding formula - I think at this point, formula would be better for your child than cow's milk. If you have to supplement her bottles, I'd try mixing some formula with breast milk rather than supplementing with cow's milk.
