Recurrent mastitis/weaning

Hello,

I did not expect to be asking this question so early, but my son is 4 months old and I've been battling recurrent mastitis since he was 6 weeks old. I really cannot keep getting sick like this and I've come to the realization that I think weaning would really be best for the whole family at this point. I don't really know how to do this due to the mastitis because obviously weaning works against the infection (Dr. said the mastitis will stick around until I'm done breastfeeding..seems to flare up every month, sometimes less than a month). Thank you for your help.

Re: Recurrent mastitis/weaning

  • I also have recurrent mastitis and DD is 4 months old. My OB suggesting dropping one feeding a day per 45 days. Basically, the slowest possible way. He also said not to pump during this time unless it's just a few minutes to make yourself comfortable. You could ask your OB to prescribe you some antibiotics to have on hand just in case the mastitis decides to make a comeback during this time.

  • One more thing...make sure you have some cabbage and ibuprofen on hand! Put a head of cabbage in the fridge and peel off a leaf and put it in your bra. Supposed to help dry you up faster and the cold will feel good on your engorged boobies!
  • Just talked to my LC today about drying up my supply due to terrible recurrent plugged ducts and in addition to the cabbage leaves, she recommends sage tea. I'll be starting the process soon.

  • Thanks for your help ladies. I'm sorry you are going through this too, nice to know I'm not the only one with this type of problem. :-/
