Pregnant after a Loss

Abdominal pain while coughing/sneezing?

I get a sharp pain when I cough or sneeze. I've noticed it a few other times before in my life, but it's been pretty consistent ever since we got our BFP. I'm hoping it's just gas or something (I have been very bloated), but OF COURSE my mind goes to all these awful places like ovarian cysts and ectopic pregnancies. Bah. Stupid PGAL paranoia. And it doesn't help that I'm a bit of a hypochondriac anyway!

Anyone else experienced this and been given a reasonable explanation? I have a new OB who I don't see for the first time until my 8 week appointment, so I really don't feel like I have the relationship established where I can be calling about every little twinge... but I would call if it sounds like it could be serious.

  • I would get it a little further along. I would try bending down so my abs didn't stretch out too fast and it helped eliminate the pain. I still do it now because I do get the same pain.

  • Completely normal. I would sneeze early on, and feel like someone was stabbing me in the lower abdomen. Leaning forward if I was sitting/standing helped, and if I was laying in bed, I would curl my legs. I think it has something to do with all of the early stretching going on in there. Whatever it is, I had it with both my DS and DD, and with these babies too. ((Hugs))

  • I am pretty sure that is RLP and completely normal.  I had it alot very early in the pg and now I have a summer cold and notice it is back.  I often hold my belly/side when I cough/sneeze, which seems to help.  More than likely it is completely normal, if it becomes crampy or rhythmic and is accompanied by fever/bleeding, definitely call your doc or head to the ER.

  • Yes, that is normal. I had all kinds of weird pains/ twinges in my upper and lower abdomen in the 1st tri as well as 2nd and now.

  • Sounds like RLP to me, completely normal. I'd keep my eye on it, if it gets significantly worse or turns in to cramps or something, then I'd give the OB a call.
  • I also had this right away, same as you. It is likely RLP. Fun times!

Ooh, yes, please do! From the other responses, it sounds like it may be RLP but would be good to hear what your doctor says too!

  • I have to hold my belly when I cough or sneeze because I get those pains too.  I have had that since the 4th or 5th week.  I would say it is nothing to worry about!  :)

  • Like others, I think it's normal, BUT based on my recent experience, you MIGHT consider a UTI.  I'm further along, but I had some pains that got worse when I sneezed and they wanted to test me for a UTI...they pointed out that UTIs manifest differently in pregnancy.  Probably not the case with you, but just thought I'd throw it out there!
