Breastfeeding

One month old EBF, ok to intro binky?

I caved in and finally gave LO a binky today (she is exactly one month). Some of the sources I read said to wait until 4 weeks, some said 6 weeks. I am ebf'ing and so far we are doing well, although her latch is a little bit off (she doesn't quite make the fish lips every time so initially there is some pain, then it subsides after about 30 seconds).

My question is, am I going to screw anything up since her latch isn't perfect? Should I not give her the binky again until she starts doing the fish lips when she latches and the initial pain is completely gone?

Ahhh, I swear, I second guess every.single.thing.

  • We followed the "rules" and waited until six weeks to try to introduce it, and as a result, DS would never take one. 90% of my friends who breastfeed started the binky on day one in the hospital and never had any latch problems. So in my (non-professional) opinion, I think you'll be fine.

  • Thanks ladies! Just as I finished posting this, I saw the tata tuesday post below and asked the question there as well. Oops!

I never thought I'd have so many questions about breastfeeding!

  • My DS1 didn't get a binky til around 8 weeks thanks MIL and kept it til he was 2.5 years and taking it was a pain. DS2 is 6 weeks and I've been trying to give one since day 1 with no luck. I actually wish he would take one, might make car rides easier lol. Totally depends on the kid

  • I was going to wait 2 weeks before I gave LO a pacifier but caved at the hospital bc she wanted to latch on to me for comfort not for a meal. It works to soothe her and she's only 6 days old and has a great latch. I'd introduce it now otherwise your LO might not ever take one.
  • LO introduced to binky in the NICU.  Never had any latch problems but we kept her on the type we got in the NICU, not as easy to stay in her mouth, so by 8 weeks, she stopped taking it.  It would fall out as soon as she stopped sucking on it so she never really developed the habit.  I'm glad we never switched her to the other type.
