5mth change in eating habit

Hi all,

My LO is 5mth old and has been and EBE. He has never had anything other than my milk. The past 2 weeks, his eating habits have changed. I assume it is from teething and a slight cold.

DH took him to the dr today to follow up on his little cough. supposedly the DR said that its time to put baby on solids and that he LO could start to "Outgrow" milk.

I think that is total BS! My doctor has been usually so pro BM....I think my dh is just beyond excited to start baby cereal. He is a FTD, I am a 2nd time mom. I personally dont feel comfortable with starting food when LO cannot support himself sitting up.

Am I being unreasonable with not wanting to start baby on cereal until he is sitting up?

I think I might be blinded by my pride or bond with being an EBF.

  • You need to talk to your DH so this can be a decision you make together.

  • If your pediatrician is generally pro-BF, then it sounds like you might have a bit of a communication mishap between what your Dr. said and what your DH heard.  Of course infants don't "outgrow" milk or formula until they are one.  But it will not hurt your LO to occassionally eat a few spoonfuls of cereal that are fed to him by his dad--your DH clearly wants to share that experience with your LO, and there is no reason not to, as long as your doctor is on board.

Just FYI--the latests studies are showing that starting solids in the 4-6 month window may actually be protective against food allergies, as long as a mom continues to breastfeed while the solids are introduced.  Our pediatrician, an attending physician at our state's Childrens Hospital, recommended we introduce a wide range of solids before our six month appointment for that reason.

  • At his 4 month appointment my pediatrician suggested starting solids at 4 months.  I told him I was planning on waiting until 6 months and he was fine with that, he wanted to give me the go-ahead just in case I wanted to start earlier since I wouldn't be seeing him again till the 6 month appointment.

We also completely skipped cereal since there's no benefit to it.
