TTC after 35

OPK+, ovulation, tempting and IUI timing question

Ladies, just I thought I get it, then I realize I don't get it, maybe you can shed some light.

I had a positive OPK on Sunday, according to the insturction by my RE, I should go in the next day for IUI which I did.  I tempted this morning, my temperature hasn't rise yet.  My question is:

If I did my IUI yesterday, and my temperature hasn't rise this morning, does that mean I wasted my IUI?

I understand that the temp rise means you already ovulate, does that means between Sunday and now I am still in the period of ovulation?  How long ovulation starts?

Re: OPK+, ovulation, tempting and IUI timing question

  • Did they do an ultrasound before your IUI?  Did you do Femara or Clomid?

I don't temp because I'm a terribly restless sleeper.  However, I kept getting positive OPKs and my RE became suspicious after tracking my LP for a few months.  We did an ultrasound before the June IUI and learned that my body was surging but not releasing an egg or doing a very slow release.  The only way to confirm actual ovulation is a progesterone test but that test only works after ovulation.  Our new plan has been to do Femara (a stronger dosage), an ultrasound on CD12 and then doing an Ovidrel shot to force a strong ovulation.  However, the higher Femara dosage caused me to ovulate on CD11.

  • I take clomid.  And, yes, they did an ultra sound on day 10 and day 14.  And, my doctor told me to continue to take the OPK and if the OPK doesn't turn positive on day 16, I was instructed to use Ovidrel.  My OPK turns positive on day 16 and I did my IUI on day 17.

I don't know, maybe I am worrying too much.

  • You're doing a natural cycle IUI, aren't you?   I think you may just have to wait and see what you're temp does for the next few days. If this cycle doesn't work you can discuss the timing with your RE. You can ovulate anywhere from 24 to 36 hours after a positive opk.

The idea is to have the sperm in before you O, so they're waiting on the egg. I've heard differing opinions on how long washed sperm last, but I don't think your IUI was wasted. I'd try on your own tonight just to increase your chances.  Good Luck!

ETA: I just saw you were pn clomid.  It should still be the same...ovulation 24 to 36 hours after + opk.

  • My Dr. doesn't even have me temping.  I took the Clomid, got ultrasounds and when he thought the follicles looked big enough he had me get the trigger shot (if you ever have to have that ice the area first, my sister told me that and I did not feel a thing!)  So anyway, I like it like that, I don't really have to think about anything.  But I do not think that you wasted it because the sperm lasts a while in there so no worries :)  Good luck with your 2ww!  I hope we both get BFPs soon!

  • Honestly, I've felt this way too about the lack of temp rise the day after an IUI. I think this is why some REs do IUIs on consecutive days (useless with MFI of course) or use a timed trigger. I'd ask for a the trigger next time. The first injection is scary, but gives you peace of mind that you aren't wasting your time.

    Good luck?
