Solid feeding - what items do you use?

Getting ready to start solids soon and was wondering what everyone used.  There's so many feeding utensils out there - mesh feeders, spoons that hold food, etc.  I just don't want to waste my money lol. Oh and I'm planning on making her food.  Didn't buy a baby food maker because I figured I could use my steamer, hand blender, and ice cube trays.  Thanks!!

  • Just the small spoons with the plastic on the ends. I've been making my own food and storing in freezer. I use the baby bullet, and fill ice cube trays. I steam or boil beforehand...sometimes I have both going to save time.

  • I have plastic bowls with lids, and metal spoons with the ends coated in plastic and bibs - lots of bibs.

I also have the baby bullet and I prepare a few different foods at a time so I have more than a week's worth ready (some of it goes in the freezer until I need it)

OP, you should be fine using the tools you already have but I wouldn't use ice cube trays, I'd get BPA free tupperware (or the equivalent) in the smallest size (I think they're 4 oz) to use instead.  Popping out one or two frozen food cubes might get tricky in a pinch whereas the individual serving cups are much easier to use.

  • I got some cute flexible spoons - Munchkin brand (I think?).  DD loves the colors, the spoon is gentle on her gums, and the handles are extra long - which means she can help get the food into her mouth.  Also, got some coordinating Mucnkin brand bowls - good price, easy to wash, and she likes the colors.  I am making food, too - figured we can just use what we have in house to steam and puree.  Best wishes!

  • Right now just using the long handled baby spoons (mine change color if the food is too hot, but I don't even heat the food, they were given to me) and a bowl.  I have a mesh feeder and a Boon squirt spoon from my first son that I will use, too.  Neither is expensive and both come in handy.  The mesh feeders are great to put berries or cut up melon in, especially when baby is teething and you can put something cold in it for them to chew and soothe their gums.  I would recommend getting one that has the plastic cover to go over the mesh to keep it clean on the go in the diaper bag, I get sick of wasting baggies on mine that doesn't have the cover.  The squirt spoons that hold food are great if you travel or eat out in restaurants a lot.  You don't have to worry about carrying a bowl, a spoon, and a container of baby food, and you can even feed baby in the carseat on the road without making a huge mess!

  • I have Nuk spoons, and make the food with the Baby Bullet. The ones that are frozen in the silicone tray I pop out and put into ziplock freezer bags so I can use them later. We have the Baby Bjorn plastic bibs which keep her so much cleaner than those stupid cloth ones lined with plastic...

  • Thanks for all the tips!  I have a Magic bullet so I figured it's basically the same thing as a baby bullet, just no storage cups.  I did find BPA free ice cube trays at Target - going to pop them out into freezer bags for storage.  Definitely need some plastic bibs - all ours are cloth!  Great ideas about on the go, too...thanks everyone :)
