Cereal in bottle?!

Everyone I know is putting cereal in their babe's nighttime bottle.  This just seems wrong to me.  I feel like my BM is enough!  However, I really don't have a good reason to back up that instinct.  Do any of you have some info that you could pass onto me as to why babies shouldn't have it??

Re: Cereal in bottle?!

  • Depends on LO's age I suppose, but introducing cereal to early can lead to constipation.

  • The only medical indication for putting cereal into bottles is to mitigate symptoms of acid reflux in infants.
  • It's really only for babies with reflux. Other than that, they shouldn't have solids until 6 months. 4 is the earliest I think. Babies who have cereal in their bottles can inhale it into their lungs. I don't know how often that happens but there is a lot of info if you Google it. Another reason they say is it can increase your baby's chance at obesity and having food allergies. My MIL told me to do it and I told her absolutely not. Breastmilk is the perfect nutrition.

  • Babies shouldn't have cereal in their bottle because it is a choking hazard. Unless directed by a pediatrician for reflux, babies shouldn't ever have cereal in a bottle. Your mamainstinct was right on this one!
