Breastfeeding

First day back at work and no milk!

Today is my first day back to work.  LO is 9 weeks old.  I have not had any problems with not having enough milk.  I fed him at 6:00 this morning.  He ate on one side and I pumped the other and got 6 oz.  So I know that I am making plenty of milk.  I pumped at school at 8:40 and 12:30.  I only pumped 1/2 an ounce each time.  Is my body aware that I am away from LO and upset about it?  Will my supply increase again and go back to normal?

  • I am sure you are stressed out about being away from LO, and not being able to pump isn't helping the stress I'm sure. It sounds like you are too tense to have a let down. Don't worry you are still producing milk just fine!!

Try relaxing, clear your mind of all work, and take some deep breaths and think about LO. Hopefully, you have some pictures to look at, or even better a video of him you can watch while pumping. I used to think about how DS's hair smelled and felt when I put my nose in his hair and smelled him, or his sweet little smile reflexes when nursing around that age. The more senses you can use to recall him, the better! GL!

  • I agree with the pp who said to try and relax. If I am having troubles with letdown, I will flip through my phone and look at DD2 (and DD1). I also found that doing something other then just sitting there helped my body relax. I cross stitch or crochet while pumping at work most days.

  • It's silly, but when I first started pumping, I used to sing to myself, "making food for the baby!" and somehow that helped with my let down. So perhaps relax and think about your LO and how you're making food for them?
  • This is really random, but if I listen to spa sounds with rain it tends to help me relax and get a let down.

  • I find that if I don't focus on the pumping at all, that I do the best.  I have movies/TV shows on my iPad and I watch them while I pump, or I check my email, Facbook, The Bump.  It helps me relax, and let down just happens.

me too. I produce the most when I am completely distracted.
