Trade in event - BRU

A while back I posted about our neighbors insisting on giving us this used travel system.  Well.. they brought it over and scattered everything across our front yard for us to take a look at.  It was horrible!  filthy dirty and even had duck tape on various parts.  It was awkward to say the least.  They acted as if it was in good shape and didn't let us decide if we wanted it or not. They just said that if we didn't want it, they wouldn't be offended and we could get rid of it somehow (not offering to take it back home and get rid of it themselves) Indifferent

The other night they stopped DH as he was coming home from work and gave him a flyer for a BRU trade in event, ending Sept. 16th.  They mentioned trading in the travel system that they left with us and getting the stroller system on our registry (for 25% off).

Has anyone ever done one of these trade in events before?  If so...

1. Can you trade in a dirty, old travel system?  Is this acceptable?

2. Does anyone know how much of a discount they end up giving you for "registry completion"?  I'm trying to figure out if I should do the trade in for our travel system or wait to see how much the discount is for the "registry completion".  Not sure which one would be most beneficial.

TIA and hope everyone's week is off to a good start!

Re: Trade in event - BRU

  • I've even seen some people buy brand new $20 cheap strollers and trade them in on the spot so they could get the 25% off a much more expensive travel system.

I'm bummed the discount isn't for Baby Jogger.

  • I just traded in our old infant seat this weekend! We probably could have gotten away with using it again but it was in a minor accident and I just didn't want to risk it. You can bring in pretty much any piece of baby gear. It doesn't matter what brand you bring in, but you can only choose from certain brands and certain categories of new items to use the 25% discount with.

Here's the fine print from their website: "You can trade-in any car seat, bassinet, stroller, travel system, play yard, high chair, walker, swing, bouncer, entertainer or activity jumpers at any of our Toys"R"Us or Babies"R"Us stores nationwide, regardless of whether you purchased the item from one of our stores. You do not need a receipt to trade-in a used item."

  • They will take complete junk for the trade in. Last year it seemed everyone that was due around the time I had DS were getting anywhere from 5-15% completion coupons from BRU with a bulk of them being 5% or 10% off .... the 15% were rare and apparently only in certain markets but you can call your local store and ask what they provide. I was able to get one for DS about 1 1/2 months before his actual due date because all my parties were over and I knew what I needed to buy so I asked at the registry counter and they gave it to me but its only good for one day. I got 10% off ... we have a Buy Buy Baby locally and BRU let me combine my 10% completion with the BBB 20% off coupons so on many of the items I got 30%.

Also, our BBB will give you 10% off for completion coupon and its good on ANYTHING (like even Baby Jogger that is normally restricted) and they will let you combine with with the 20% BRU coupons so you can get 30% off there too.

With all that being said the BEST deals I've ever gotten have been at the local ma & pop baby stores just by asking if they have a better deal or can match the big box stores. I've saved a ton on expensive strollers and furniture for my 2 LOs.

  • My Aunt works there and they will take ANYTHING on that list no matter the condition.  The completion discount is 10%.  They will not give that to you until you close out your registry obviously.  So I would trade that junk in and get your nice shiny new stoller at 25% cheaper :-)

  • I've done the trade in a couple times, PP's are right, they'll take anything. And the trade in discount is 25% where the completion discount is 10%. If there is more than one thing you'd like to get the trade in discount on, make sure you turn in the stroller and the car seat separately. Go on different days or have YH do a separate transaction or something. There's no reason to turn it in as one item if you can use multiple discounts. Oh, and I'm someone that's found a nasty, old booster seat on CL for $5 in order to get the discount. Big Smile

I've heard people discourage the trade in event because BRU will up their prices so your discount isn't a great and they'll claim you can find the same product cheaper somewhere else w/o the discount but that's never stopped me. It's convenient and easy and you're still saving money. Have fun shopping!

  • I can't answer any of your other questions, but I would most definitely take that thing in and attempt to trade.
  • Thanks everyone!!  Can't wait to go trade it in and get something we really want!
