Breastfeeding

Older babies and feeding frequency

I have an almost 7 mo who is easily distracted when nursing.  I'm trying to make sure she gets most of her nutrition during the day so we don't have to get up so much at night.  Currently we are waking 1 or 2 times a night (mostly 2 times).  Do you feed less frequently to make sure LO gets fuller feeds?  Do you do a dream feed before you go to bed?

  • I did a dream feed.

I'm still up 1-2 x a night. Probably not what you wanted to hear.

  • I tried a dream feed. That just meant a dream feed plus getting up. Ro still wakes up between 3 and 4 AM. I'm just happy she goes back to sleep now.

  •  Right now he's waking up about 50% of nights for a feed between 2-3, otherwise he sleeps until 5 or 6am, nurses, and (hopefully) goes back down until 6:30-7. Right now he will only nurse before naps and bed, so I don't mind him getting in a quality feed during the nighttime hours.

Yikes, not at all what I wanted to hear.  I was hoping she'd start STTN around 9 months, which is when I go back to work.  That's looking like a pipe dream.

  • We considered both DDs to be poor sleepers until they each hit some miracle 9mo wow time when they became great sleepers.  Both co-slept easily until 8mo then started waking all the time, transitioned to the crib and BAM DD2 has been sleeping 930p-930a for 2 weeks now.  Hope I'm not jinxing myself!  Every kid is different, but apparently there is a trend in our family- and perhaps I should have transition to the crib earlier- ha.  I do try to nurse right before bed to "top her off" but doubt that makes the difference.
