Breastfeeding

quick question on pump/block feeding

Bad timing - I go back to work tomorrow and pretty sure I have a foremilk/hindmilk imblance.

Right now LO eats every 2-3 hours.  He drains one breast, burp, then offer the other. He usually takes the entire second breast or at least some of it.  Then I offer the breast I left off on at his next feeding.

I will feed him around 6AM before daycare, then he will have bottles at daycare from 7AM-4PM.

So should I "block feed" by pumping one breast every 2 hours (meaning each breast will only get pumped every 4 hours)?  Or, should I wait a week before starting this since we are both going through this daycare transition?

Any thoughts?

Re: quick question on pump/block feeding

  • I don't see how you could have a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance if your LO is completely draining 1 breast at each feeding, at least.

I would 110% pump both breasts at the same time, and start at every 3 hours and only pump more often than that if you need to (I did need to, so I pumped every 2 hours).

Block feeding is for crazy oversupply.  If your LO can empty a breast, I don't think you have oversupply.

  • Pump both sides. The pump won't get as much milk out as the baby; don't waste time pumping one side.

Why do you think you have a problem?
