Babies: 9 - 12 Months

how do you change LO? (diaper&clothes)

I have used my changing table from day 1..  but DD is getting to long for it, not to mention she is a total wiggle worm, flips over and HATES getting her diaper changed or new clothes on.I used to be able to give her some random thing to distract her but that doesn't really work anymore... I have tired laying her on my bed or on the floor but she will scream bloody murder and go into a panic?!?!? Its weird.  Lately I have been chasing her around the house trying to change her while shes standing at a toy or the couch,, It should really be and Olympic event.

I'm about to order some Diapers online and Im considering getting Huggies Little movers slip on's? Anyone use those?

How do you manage to change your little ball on energy? Its a fight right?

  • I've used the slip ons, they are really easy.  I just continue to find new ways to distract him.  I've heard a helium balloon tied to the changing table works great, because it's something they can only play with during a diaper change.

  • I personally don't like the slip ons.  We've had nothing but leak issues with those and we never have problems with Huggies.  We still use the changing table and I just lay her back down over and over and over because she's constantly flipping over and trying to stand on the table.

The balloon worked great for us for a while, but after about 6-7 weeks, it got old.  Stickers also help distract DD now - I stick them on her feet or legs while I'm trying to change her diaper, and she just focuses on picking it off and stays still for a while.

  • Ha!  It is so difficult anymore.  I try to keep his attention with a toy, although that doesn't always work.  Good luck...hope to hear of some great ideas on here myself!

  • My DD got so strong willed as she got older, I literally laid her on the floor, straddled my legs, put my left leg across her chest and changed her as fast as I could.

Yep, we used that strategy, too. Right now for DD2 I still use the changing table and give her something that is normally off limits to hold - tube of Butt Paste, the thermometer, one of her sister's toys :P That works sometimes, but usually I just have to be as fast as possible or pin her with one arm and change with the other.

  • Yes, its a fight, and yes, its totally normal, and for me, it got way harder with DD, when she was like 18 months, it took two of us to do it most mornings!

Don't use the changing table anymore, it's easier to pin the kid down (gently of course) on the floor and change them really quickly, and safer. Good luck!

  • Yeah, it's definitely a struggle. Like PP, I distract her with something normally off limits. For us, it's my cell phone or digital camera or the tv remote. For changing clothes she is more open to having clothes put on if she is standing up for some reason. So I will have her lean against me or the couch and slip one arm at a time then quickly over her head. Pants are more difficult, but we make do.

  • Keep a basket of small toys that she doesn't get to play with all the time next to the changing table. I've found that this helps distract DD and then I change her as quickly as possible. DS went through this too and it got better as he got a little older.

  • If we are upstairs I still use the changing table for diapers but if not, the floor works just fine. I am in the pin them down with one arm or leg and finish quickly. For changing clothes I let him sit up for shirts and then he sits in my lap facing outward while we put his pants and socks on. He just likes to see what is coming next I think.

  • For diapers we still change him on the changing table - we flipped direction we change him last month, and that seems to have worked, maybe because he has new things to look at?

For clothes, I sit him on the floor in front of the mirror and put on his shirt and attempt to put on bottoms.  Most of the time that works, otherwise the bottoms get put on while he's crawling somewhere or playing with something.

  • haha I just read this post to DH because this sounds exactly like what we go through...I HATE changing DD's diaper!!! LOL  I'm also considering trying the slip on diapers I actually just posted asking about them the other day...I still have a bunch of regular diapers to get through but when I get close to running out I think I'll just buy a small pack of the slip ons to try them out first. I think I might try that sticker idea for now though...that sounds like it would be funny to watch lol :)

I was so excited to try the stickers, I knew DD would enjoy it. unfortunately DD gets them off within seconds of me putting them on..Great Idea though... Moving on to trying the balloon..
