Nursing time with/without nipple shield

DS has been off the nipple shield for just about a week now.  With the nipple shield he was nuring for 30-45 mins each feeding.  Without the nipple shield he nurses only for about 5 - 10 mins total.  I know the time should be less...but should it be THAT much less?  He's happy and content so I'm sure he's fine, but I'm just curious if others saw that much decrease in time.

Re: Nursing time with/without nipple shield

  • Well I will say that 2 weeks into nursing DS #2 I am shocked at how quickly he nurses (no nipple shield).  I have these memories of DS #1 nursing forever when he was first born and we used a nipple shield for about 7 weeks.  So, if your LO is content I would say all is good!

  • The nipple shield makes them work harder to get enough of what they need. So yes it would be reduced. Mine did the same thing. Plus a 3mth old can really go to town.

This happened with DD. I was also very surprised at how much faster nursing is w/o the shield!

This has been almost exactly my experience.

  • If your baby is happy and making you the usual number of diapers, all is well.
  • Glad you posted this. Same thing happened to me. Many times I feel like I need to force him to eat more bc it was so fast!
