Hey ladies, DS has thrush and I am pretty sure that means I do as well. I was just recovering from a nursing injury from a poor latch soon after he was born and now my nipples are constantly hurting again.
I got some genetian violet, but was just wondering can I still pump with it on? My milk had a purplish tint to it last night so we tossed it...
Please let me know if you have any suggestions or advice that could help. Also, is there any way to prevent it from getting all over DS's face while nursing?
Re: Thrush question?
Ugh I'm so sorry you guys have thrush, it sucks. I think I did the same as you the first time I pumped with it because the milk had a purple tint. I only used a little bit on a Q tip on my nipples and it was enough to coat his mouth. I suggest putting a little Vaseline or something on his face around his mouth before nursing then wiping it off after so he doesn't have a purple face. What did your pediatrician give you to use?
By the way if he has thrush you both need to be getting treated or you'll pass it back and forth. If just your nipples hurt ask your gyno for a script for Newman's Nipple cream. It has antibiotics, antifungal and steroids in it to help nipple pain and to treat any possible infection and it's safe for baby. It's creamy and wonderful and I love it.
If the pain gets really bad, you might have thrush in your ducts (happened to me) and I got 30 days of Diflucan. Other things you can try before then that don't hurt anything is probiotics and grapefruit seed extract. Both should help.
Hope you get through this soon! My son is only 4 months old but it seems like a long time ago I was right where you are with my nipples constantly hurting and one thing after another- hang in there it gets SO much easier!! Just be sure to sterilize everything that touches his mouth or your breasts for a while even after your symptoms are gone. It's a p.i.t.a. but it doesn't last forever.
Seriously ask for Newman's nipple cream, I still use it whenever I get the slightest bit sore, it's amazing.
