Breastfeeding

Relactation

Who's been successful with this? I stopped feeding my three month old when he was about 2 1/2 weeks old due to severe mastitis and thrush with both of us. I'm wanting to try and start breastfeeding him again and was wondering who has had past success doing so and how you went about it. Advice and tips would be greatly appreciated! I heard about Fenugreek but not sure if it is safe to take while pregnant.

Re: Relactation

  • In your case, I would contact la leche to get advice, especially since you are currently pregnant.  I haven't personally had experience with re-lactation, but a good friend of mine didn't have her milk come in until she was 6 weeks pp.

  • I have successfully re-lactated, however I'm confused, are you   6 weeks pregnant with a 3 month old baby? If you are currently pregnant I don't think you will have much success to be completely honest.

that being said, get your baby to latch as much as possible, skin to skin contact etc.  pump ever 2-3 hours around the clock.  you may need to ask your doctor about reglan or domperidone

  • At this point I feel like I can say I've been successful relactating. I'm still not where I want to be supply-wise (I would like for my girls to be EBF) but given that I had nothing and now have enough that one baby could be EBF, I think I could call it a success. I stopped when my girls were a week old, and then began the relactation process about two weeks later. I rented a Symphony pump again and took Fenugreek. I tried to get them to latch, but to be honest, I didn't try that very often. I occasionally got some skin to skin time in. I went from getting drops when I would pump to now getting about 25/oz a day. I have no idea how it would work if you are pregnant, and since it's been a couple months. I wish you lots of luck though!
