Breastfeeding

Oversupply and still not enough?

I am new to EBF, with DD1 I was a EP'r. DD2 now has a great latch and she is getting milk. My boobs are constantly in pain from the amount of milk I am making. While feeding her I can see the milk spilling out of her mouth and when she unlatches I almost always spray her in the face. I feel like I am nursing her every 30mins! She does fall asleep on the boob and I try my hardest to keep her awake but it doesn't always work. When she does fall asleep she seems to be pacifying and not eating, so I unlatch her. She almost immediately wakes up looking for more. Then there are times when she nursing like a champion and still seems hungry. I know I'm producing enough because my boobs hurt and when I pump I'm getting 5oz or more. I'm sorry for the mish mosh but I'm trying to figure out what is going on. Any ideas? Also, is it necessary for me to pump at all? I would really like to just EBF.

Re: Oversupply and still not enough?

  • Put the pump away :)  It sounds like you are giving yourself an oversupply if you are pumping 5+ ounces after baby nurses.  If you are engorged, hand express just enough to take the edge off.  You may need to try block nursing if you are still having issues once you stop pumping for a few days.

Very very very normal for her to nurse all the time - that's just what newborns do!

  • Okay so I'm a newbie at this..what is block feeding? I do swaddle her and it does make a huge difference. Thank you so much. :)

I think you'll find your answer to that (and much more!) here:

  • Block feeding is where you only nurse off of one breast for a designated amount of time. Example of a two hour block...it's 1000 and you nurse on right side until baby is done. Do not offer left. Baby is rooting again at 1130. Two hours haven't passed so you put baby back on the right breast and keep them there until next feeding. Baby is rooting again at 100, switch to left side.

You hold out until your designated block time has passed. Start w a two hour block and go up to 2.5 or 3 or 4 if you have to.

If the non nursing breast starts getting uncomfortable, then express enough milk just to comfort. You don't want to stimulate your breasts to make more milk.

Check out Kelly mom for more info and put that pump away lol

  • How is your DD tolerating the oversupply? Is she spitting up a lot or does she keep most of it down?
  • She does spit up but not after every feeding. Usually it seems like a lot but I don't think it is.
