Breastfeeding

HelpLO 4 days old

My milk just came in today and my LO won't latch on my right nipple! I had to pump after I fed her since she only took the left one. My breasts are huge and rock solid and feel like they will explode. Is this what they should feel like? I'm going to an LC tmrwshould I keep pumping the right one if she won't take from it tonight? Cus I think it will explode if I don't! Any suggestions? I tried squeezing a bunch out first from the right one but still no good.

  • She's probably getting full off the first breast since it's so full.  Is she falling asleep or just refusing to take the 2nd breast when you offer it?  If she's falling asleep at the first breast, try changing her diaper in between.  If she's just refusing it, she's probably full.  Just offer her that side next time.  Try not to pump too much off of it so you don't tell your body that you need that milk.  Just pump/express enough to make yourself comfortable.

Excellent advice!  My little girl is 3 months old and still only nurses on one side per nursing.  Your breasts will adjust.

  • I offer her the right one first but she won't take it period :'

Not even after I start her on the left then try the right again.

Is it possible you are holding her at a slightly different angle or something at the right breast?  I would try another position at that breast and see if that helps (like football hold if you are doing cradle).

I've tried football and cradle with her for the right.
  • Can you hand express a little off your right breast before you offer it? This helped me when my milk first came in. I also used ice packs 1020 mins before nursing on my "full" side. Or you can try standing in the shower with the water hitting your back. Sometimes those things help your breasts soften up.
