PLEASE HELP! So many questions...
A couple of days a go we finally got the hang of breast feeding. At the time, I was pumping after every feeding as that was the advice my LC had given, and she had also recommended that I continue pumping after every feeding once he got the hang of it to keep up my supply. I pump 3-4 oz (plus) every 2-3 hours!! My freezer is overflowing!
I want to stop pumping, I pumped once last night when I became really engorged and he was sleeping for a really long time. He is just 2 weeks old. When he eats it sounds like he is gulping down mouth fulls, but he only eats for 10-15 minutes. I don't think he is emptying the breast. Also, I leak like crazy!! I wake up in puddles. When he feeds from one side I have to keep a towel under the other side and we both end up covered in breast milk still. How do I get this under control?!!! Should I pump before feedings to eliminate some of the extra? Am I going to risk eliminating my supply if I don't continue to pump? I think this is my biggest concern....dealing with the reverse after we just goth breast feeding down!
Re: My boobs are going to explode....
If you don't need the milk stash, I see no reason for you to continue pumping (before or after any feedings). All you are doing is telling your body to make even more milk.
It will take awhile for your body to adjust to what your son is demanding (remember breastfeeding is a supply and demand system). The leaking will slowly get better, though I always leaked a little on the side not being nursed on.
It sounds like you are definitely not having any low supply issues, so I wouldn't worry at all about eliminating your supply if you don't pump.
I'm not sure if that answers everything, but I hope it helps!
ETA: I nursed my son for 17 months and am nursing baby #2 as well. The only time I ever pump is if I get engorged for some reason, and then I pump as little as necessary to ease the discomfort - an ounce or two.
