I like the looks of Paloma, but would not use it b/c it's a cocktail made of tequila and grapefruit juice or Fresca/Squirt. (I would also not name my kid Margarita, for the same reason).
But, if you live somewhere with a low Mexican population that may not come up as much. And it is Spanish for "dove," which is nice.
Ursula also reminds me of the Little Mermaid... and Friends (wasn't that Phoebe's sister aka the waitress from Mad About You, also played by Lisa Kudrow?)
I agree about thinking of the little mermaid with Ursula, but I met an Ursula IRL and she was awesome. So I don't think so much of the little mermaid now when I hear the name.
I really like both of them. They're such strong names, however, that I'd have a hard time picking between the two without knowing more about the baby-to-be. I think a name like Paloma or Ursula is so special that it needs to be for just the right child and vice versa.
In real life, I actually have a friend whose name is Ursula. She goes by her middle name, however, which is Michelle. I think that's so disappointing.
I like both a lot but I feel like they are sort of last name dependent (unless the names have a personal significance). For instance Paloma Smith doesn't work as well as with a Spanish last name IMO.
Ursula was my grandmother's name. I loved and admired her a lot. If we have another baby, I am determined to use either her first name (for a girl) or her maiden name (for a boy) as a middle name. I'm not sure I could use it as a first name, but I do wish others would use it to reclaim it from the Little Mermaid association. Though I've never loved it, it is a good, classic name and it doesn't deserve to be ruined by a fugly mean sea witch.

I think I may the one person who doesn't associate Ursula with The Little Mermaid. I do think of Ursula Andress (Bond girl). I'd say that it's one of those names that typically get a strong reaction?mine is positive. I think it's a great name and I love the "little bear" meaning.
Paloma is undeniably beautiful. Love it. If I had the Spanish background to pull it off, I'd probably pick it of the two.

Love Paloma... know one IRL and when I first heard it, I was like wow, beautiful name!
Ursula does also remind me of the Little Mermaid and IMO sounds like a homely, old lady name (sorry if its a family name).
Ohhh lol (-:
I really like Paloma! It's beautiful and not over-used.
For me, Ursula is reminiscent of the evil witch from the Little Mermaid, so it's not a name I like... personally.
Paloma is lovely.
Even though I want to like Ursula, I can't shake the sea witch thing, either.
Paloma for sure! DS1 had a Paloma in his preschool class last year.
There is nothing pretty about Ursula to me.
I like Paloma the best. I think it is beautiful.

Unfortunately, with Ursula, all I think is the evil sea witch from the Little Mermaid!
I first thought of Palermo, Italy, but that association is fine. I like the name Paloma.
Ursula is a sea witch, not an association I'd choose for my daughter.
This!

Thumbs up to both!
