BFing and STTN

Is it ok to let LO STTN if i'm BFing?  I'm just getting over low supply issues (taking Domperidone).  And I know that being engorged can tell my body to stop producing milk.  Now i'm afraid to let LO go too long between feeds and put my supply at risk again.  He is still nursing every 2-3 hours, but at night he is only up twice now (1am and 4am) and one night last week actually slept 8hours without waking.  When he finally did wake up I was really engorged and then nervous my supply would drop again.

If you BF do you let your LO STTN?  Or do you wake after a certain amount of time and nurse/pump?

Re: BFing and STTN

  • My DD sleeps through the night some nights (11 - 12 hours) and other nights she wakes up to nurse at 4:30.  I don't have a low supply so on the STTN nights I don't wake up to pump. I am usually engorged in the morning, but it hasn't affected my supply on the nights she wakes up.  It's usually only 2 days a week that she STTN and the other 5 days she wakes up once to nurse at night. I think that your DS is old enough to let him sleep, but I'm not sure about your supply. Usually they will nurse less and get more at once. Have you had a weighted feed to see how much he is getting at once? Sorry I have no other suggestions. I say let him sleep.

  • If I'm really uncomfortable I'll pump just enough to be pain free and let him sleep.

  • I haven't had low supply issues and can only speak from my personal experience, but my daughter now regularly sleeps 10-11 hours at night and I've had no issues. I went back to work 2 weeks ago and started pumping and I'm actually able to pump more than she's eating during the day. I wake up full and kind of uncomfortable some mornings, but not engorged (boobs are not rock hard and lumpy)

  • My 1 year old just started sleeping through the night, but to build my freezer stash, I regularly pump around 9-9:30pm before I go to bed, about 2 hours after his last feed. This helps me to make it through the night without being engorged in the morning. The nights I am too lazy to pump, I usually wake up around 4 very engorged and need to pump a bit off.
