Preemies

We're home! (and BF/pumping update)

We were discharged on Thursday after 48 hours with no feeding bradys! The nurse that was pushing for our discharge was pissed he was held on Tues because she's convinced the night nurse overreacted a bit. His regular neo was more worried about the possibility of infection from staying than the 50 grams he lost over 3 days (probably because he was switched to a lower cal formula!). We're so happy, but so tired! The poor thing is so gassy and doesn't like being put down. We're looking forward to our first pediatrician appt on Monday so we can see about maybe switching formula again.

If you remember I was trying to keep pumping til he got home. A week and a half ago my supply dropped. It looks like having him home and at least nuzzling my breast has restored it, but I've decided to wean off the pump. I'm spending 4.5 hours a day pumping to get just under 3oz. I'd rather spend that time sleeping or with my son. I'm sad, but at the same time, I'm looking forward to being done with the pump and the extra sleep and time with my son. In the long run, I feel that's the best thing for our family and will remember that I kept at it for 12 weeks. My LC and husband have reminded me I really did try everything for as long as I could.

My deal is that I am going to murder your puppies and piss on your rainbows. -diablesse Lilypie Premature Baby tickers

  • Congrats on being home!  You did a fabulous job pumping for those 12 weeks...it is hard work!  I hope you can find the right formula for your LO.  My LO was very gassy too (i think it is common with preemies) and we put gas drops in every bottle, used a wide neck bottle nipple, bicycled her legs, massage etc.  She is also on Prevacid and Zantac.  It is really getting a lot better but I think it is something she is growing out of now that she moves her legs a lot more and likes to sit and "stand".  It was hard at the time, but it gets better!
