Separation Anxiety

DS has had a problem with this ever since he was a newborn. He always needs to be in arms' reach from me (preferably in my arms), and he won't let anyone else carry or hold him for more than a minute. It's driving me crazy! I can't get anything done around the house, let alone spend time with our other kids.

Just want to see if I'm not alone, or any advice? Eta: He does pretty well with DH, but still would rather be with me.

Re: Separation Anxiety

  • DD is very similar when she is with me. She does well in daycare and is ok if/when I leave her with DH or a grandparent, but if I'm around, she wants to be with me, on me, holding my hand, having me hold her, etc. She'll be in the middle of playing or watching a show and if I get up and leave the living room, she follows me. She doesn't want to be far from me, ever. It does get a little old every once and awhile and it hurts DH's feelings that she wants so little to do with him, but I try to remember that she'll only feel this way for a short period of time.

Glad I'm not alone in this. I hope it gets better for you!

  • My second ds is like this sometimes.  My advice to you, just let yours be, as in, if you need to get something done, just do it.  Letting him cry for a few minutes (as lng as he's alright obviously) won't hurt him.  Same with having other people hold him.  He needs to learn that it's OK not to be held, by you, all of the time.

Exactly this. He loves to be with others as long as I'm not there.
