I was scheduled to have a c-section on Tuesday morning (8/21) but started feeling a dull achy pain in my right side on Saturday. I've had lots of aches and pains and chalked it up to being near the end of my pregnancy. Come Sunday night the pain was significant enough that I didn't want to move much but I wasn't having any kind of contraction pains or other clear signs of labor. I started spotting a little around 7pm on Sunday and again chalked it up to being near the end. I told my husband about it and he asked me to just call the doctor and make sure they were aware.
I was hesitant but called anyway. The doctor asked me to go to the hospital and just be checked since baby A was breech and she didn't want me to have to suffer through labor if I didn't need to. By the time we arrived at the hospital about 30 minutes later I was in absolute agony. The pain in my side was growing more intense by the second. It didn't even occur to me that the pain was related to something other than labor. Once they hooked me up to the monitors they found my contractions were 4 minutes apart and I was 2cm. My doctors decided to go ahead with the c-section that night.
While waiting for the OR to be set up I was in so much pain. The nurse was watching the monitor and saying, "the contraction should be easing up...are you not feeling any relief?" and I wasn't. It was constant unbearable pain, like someone was ripping my stomach open on the side. After 3 attempts at my spinal we were finally ready for the big moment and I was feeling some relief.
Shortly afterwards our daughter was born weighing 6lbs6oz. At the big moment I heard a gasp and a splash and realized that something was very wrong. My doctor peeked over the curtain with blood spatters covering her mask and goggles to inform me that I had a placental abruption and our daughter was in distress. They rushed her to the NICU, I never saw her. Our son was born one minute later, also weighing 6lbs6oz and was clearly in distress too but not as bad as our daughter.
They started pumping me full of fluids, blood and medications to try to get me stabilized as I was losing a lot of blood. The doctor explained that the placenta had obviously torn away prior to delivery as the blood looked clotted and old and it was likely the pain I had been feeling.
I could see our son out of the corner of my eye and they were suctioning him and getting loads of blood out of his lungs and stomach. He had aspirated the blood that was released after his sister was born. They were helping him breathe and talking about taking him to the NICU too. Thankfully he started pinking up and breathing a little better. I think that they didn't want to take both babies away and I'm thankful that they didn't have to. The doctors kept popping in to give us updates on our daughter. She had aspirated a lot of blood into her lungs and her belly was full of blood. Thank goodness she is such a fighter. We actually changed her name from Amelia to Vivian to celebrate her vitality and vivaciousness.
She couldn't be touched or held while in the NICU because it caused her to get too excited and she didn't breathe well, which was the hardest part of the ordeal. Thankfully we were pretty oblivious to just how serious their situation had been. Two days later she was finally released from the NICU and reunited us. The NICU nurses and doctors told us that it was an absolute miracle that both babies had survived but especially our daughter. They explained that if we had waited to go to the hospital, even another hour, both babies would have likely not survived and my life would have also been in danger.
Thankfully, we were released all on the same day and I now have the two most precious gifts I have ever been given. My DH and I have never been happier.
Thanks to everyone on this board, from the bottom of my heart, for helping me along in my pregnancy and most of all for teaching me that when it doubt...call the doctor!

Congratulations on the arrival of Samuel & Vivian! Glad your husband pushed you to call the doctor & y'all welcomed two beautiful babies!
They both had seperate placentas as far as I knew but there was obviously some kind of link there. I think it's possible that his aspiration was just a result of the massive amount of blood everywhere. I was 36 weeks 6 days when they were born.
