Doc not measuring belly

When does the doctor start measuring my belly? I am 27 weeks and he hasn't done this yet.. I had it done a couple of times earlier in my pregnancy.  Also, I see a lot of women mention there baby is measuring 1 week ahead or 2 weeks behind.. how do you know this?  Because I don't know this and my doc hasn't told me anything about his size.. not since my 20 week scan.

Re: Doc not measuring belly

  • I don't remember if my dr measured with a tape measurer with DS or not.  I know that with this pregnancy he has not.  My dr just feels my abdomen for the top of my uterus. There isn't any actual measuring done.  But I have heard that measuring by fundal height is innaccurate anyway, so I'd take anything with a grain of salt.  I wouldn't worry about not being measured.

  • So far my doctor just feels my abdomen, finds the top of my uterus, and measures it vertically with a tape measure. I don't really pay attention if he does more than that, because usually he does this when he first comes in the room and he's also cracking jokes, so I'm busy laughing. I think most people referring to their baby being 'behind' is from a u/s they've had.

  • I have had extra growth scans due to being high risk and they measure the baby every couple of weeks via ultrasound.  It is highly inaccurrate but it does give them some basis to ensure that the baby is still growing.  That is how I know that my baby "has a big head".

I wouldn't be concerned but I would inquire if they take fundal measurements and if not, why.  But that's just me.  I like to have the reasoning behind why or why not.

I have been getting measured at my regular appointments though.  Are they at least feeling for the top of your uterus?

  • I had my belly measured at my 24 & 28 week appointments.  They also felt for the top of my uterus.  I had my 30 week appointment yesterday and they did not measure my belly... which I thought was strange.  I don't remember them feeling for the top of my uterus either.  They checked the baby's HR, took my blood pressure and the doc pressed around to feel for the baby's head.. which was a new thing & somewhat uncomfortable.  That was it.
  • The doctor has measured my stomach ever since 19 weeks.

  • Mine started measuring my fundal height at my last appt (24w).  In terms of when I say my baby is measuring ahead, it is based on my u/s results.  The reports clearly state measurements for DS head diameter, head circumference and body circumferance as measuring 7-9d ahead.

He said my measurements looked good last appt, but didn't eloborate.  At my next appt, I will ask him exactly what I am measuring.  We are contemplating a c/s because DS was huge and broke my tailbone last time and I don't want to risk another vaginal birth of a big baby and further/permanent damage to my tailbone, so these measurements will help me to make my decision.

  • I see an OB every two weeks (although that will change to once a week before too much longer, I'm high risk), and have only had my belly measured twice when I had to see a different OB because my regular doctor was on leave.  However, my regular doctor usually does a quick ultrasound to check the heart rate, my cervix, the placenta and to make sure LO is moving about, whereas the substitute OB only uses a doppler to check heart rate at his appointments.  I've only had two actual growth scans where they've told me how LO is growing compared to his age, my OB seems to do them once very four weeks right now, I don't know if that's normal or not.

  • They started measuring at 22 weeks again at 26.  He didn't say anything the first time and the 2nd time he said "hmmm, measuring on the large side."   I don't have a big bump, and now I am kicking myself wondering what the heck that all meant.

  • Ohhh nooo.  I don't know why but it is really bothering me that he hasn't been checking my height or even touching my abdomen!  Why hasn't he been doing this :(  Now I am really anxious for my next appointment.. I am going to ask him to do all of that stuff!

IDK your situation exactly, but my really good friend had a c/s with #1, a VBAC with #2 where she broke her tailbone, but with #3 she had another VBAC with no complications and the tailbone wasn't an issue.  She was also 42 weeks when she delivered #3.  Just saying that breaking the tailbone could be a fluke accident.  But I understand the fear of having it happen again.  I just wanted to give you a little hope on the subject. :)
