Back labor? Or am I just making things up?

So last night I got about 2 hours of sleep due to horrific back pain. No positions really seemed to get it to stop. Then every few minutes the pain would get much much worse for anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute. It started to get worse about every 4 minutes consistently for almost an hour but then it died down to where I could sleep. This morning though its starting to happen again. Not as intense or frequent yet, but its happening.

Is this back labor  or am I just getting so desperate for labor to start that i'm reading way too much into it?

Re: Back labor? Or am I just making things up?

  • It definitely could be back labor. I had TERRIBLE back labor with dd#1. I don't even remember feeling the contractions anywhere else because it was so intense in my back.

  • You can certainly have prodromal back labor. Do you know if your baby is OP or OA? Both of mine were OP and I had on-and-off back labor before things really kicked into gear. The biggest helps to me were hot water (bath or shower), being on a ball, and counter-pressure on my back.
  • I had 21 hrs of back labor and it was terrible. No position was comfortable, I only felt the pain in my back like you described, every few minutes and lasting so many seconds and it would get intense and peak and then subside. I also began throwing up with the intense back labor once I was in active labor. Luckily my epi did kill the back labor once I got it, but it was seriously the worst pain I've ever felt. If yours died down though and you were able to sleep, maybe it was just prodromal...
