Sleeping at hotel w/DD -

Hi all! We are going away on vacation and I am wondering if anyone has had any luck with getting there LO to sleep in a crib that isn't their own. DD is 10 mon and we have taken her places in the past and she had an awful time adjusting to not sleeping in her own crib, but that was a few months ago. I'm hoping this time goes better, but does anyone have any tips about putting their LO down if its not their crib? Thanks =)

Re: Sleeping at hotel w/DD -

  • We just keep the same routine that we do at home.  Also, it helps if we can move the crib to an area where DS can't see us.  He will cry more if he can look directly at us.

  • We stick to the normal routine as much as possible and try to make it dim in the room when we put it down.  It's hard if we want tow atch tv or something though after she goes to sleep since she goes to sleep at 7:30!

We haven't had many issues, but it's also (as we all know) different from baby to baby.

  • Has LO slept anywhere besides the crib recently? Does LO ever sleep in a pack-n-play? If you have a PNP at home I would potentially try to use it for naps prior to your trip.

     Good luck.

  • IMO, the keys to getting DC to sleep in a hotel room are to keep bedtime as close to normal as possible in terms of time and routine and having a hotel room that has separate spaces so that you can keep it dark and quiet when DC is asleep but you're still awake

We do different things depending on the age/stage but at 10 months I'd be tempted to co-sleep in a hotel room

  • Try bringing the crib sheet off her bed from home and use it in the crib at the hotel. This works for our DD because it is a familiar smell and feel for her.

And call ahead to see what kind of "crib" they have.  Many, many hotels actually use PnPs, in which case you'd want to bring a PnP rather than crib sheet

  • We stayed in a hotel when we visited family a couple of months ago. The hotel provided a PnP for us, not a crib. She had slept in a PnP before because the ILs and my parents both have one, so it wasn't completely strange to her. I brought along a blanket from home to set on top of the sheets provided so she might have the scent of home, but it was also more comfortable. I also brought her FP Seahorse because she is used to the music when I put her down. I basically did the same bedtime routine and made sure it was dark when we put her in the PnP. She did great. Just wear out baby beforehand so they are super tired when you put them down.

  • We always take our own pack and play when we travel. That way it's a familiar bed to her, which makes it easier to get her down. And like everyone said, we keep to her bedtime routine as much as possible, and have all of her regular bedtime things - nuks, her seahorse, blanket.

  • I was really worried about this a few months back when we moved and had to stay in a condo for 3 days while the movers came, etc. Everything went fine.  He did great.  He was 9mos at the time.

I did rent a regular crib from a baby rental place.  Yes, he's slept in a PNP before, but I just thought a crib would be better.  I put his bumpers in there and his sheet.  I kept his routine exactly the same, and at the same times despite the hecticness we were going through with the move.  I had to make time to keep things on his schedule.

His first "sleep" in the rented crib in a new strange room was his afternoon nap. I did his nap wind down (singing to him), put his white noise on, put towels on the window to make it dimmer, snuggled him with his blankie, and he did great!  6 naps and 3 bed times in a strange new place and he was a champ.  I was soooooooo relieved!

    Good luck!

We also bring our own pack n play and keep the bedtime routine the same. But we don't stress out about bedtimes when we travel, or making sure we're back in the hotel by a certain time. If he goes to bed a little late we're okay with that. He usually sleeps fine in hotels.

  • I was worried about this since we were going on vacation for a week and a half and DD had to sleep in her PNP and we all had to sleep in the same room.  IT actually worked out ok.  we use a sound machine and i brought her blankee and did the same routine for going down.  we didn't have any issues except like another poster said as soon as she saw us when she woke up it was the end.  I tried putting an a&a blanket on the side of the pnp so she couldn't see me sneak away after putting her down etc... but if she stood up it was over.  lol GL!

  • Thanks everyone! I made sure to keep her bedtime as close as possible and brought her nini (blankie that she sleeps w/everynight) and she did great! A little fussing the first night but nothing major! =)
