Can labor stop due to sleeping?

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but as a FTM I was just wondering. I'm 39 weeks 4 days. I had my check up yesterday and I was 2 cm dilated and 70% effaced and had bleed a lot afterwards. I've been having a lot of contractions last that were starting to be pretty regular every 8 to 9 minutes and lasting almost a minute. Some so bad they woke me up at 2 in the morning. Thinking this was labor I went back to sleep so I could rest up and in the morning they had completely stopped. I've had some more contractions on and off today but nothing like last night and not as regular. I've had tons of Braxtons these past few weeks and I've heard that when it's the real thing I'd know, and that's what I thought last night was. Is it possible that labor started and stopped or are those were just really mean convincing BHs? Thanks so much for your help.

  • I don't know if this totally answers your question, but during labor I was so exhausted I fell asleep between contractions occasionally. Definitely woke up with each contraction though, and the falling asleep didn't slow things down.

A couple weeks before the real deal I had contractions that were every 10 minutes for several hours but they eventually went away. I thought it might be the start of labor since they were consistent and time-able, but it wasn't. Contractions during labor were much more intense/painful.

  • Sounds like BH. You will be in pain it will wake you up. The pain is 'toe curling" you will know when it's real. Sleep will bot make it sleep nothing will make it stop if it is real

  • Ok, then so it was probably just false labor then. Boy this is getting frustraiting. Thanks for your help.

  • This happened to me two nights in a row.  THey were more than just BH contractions and I also had bloody show in the morning.  ON the 3rd night I took a unison so I could sleep.  THe next night my water broke, labor started strong and real and DS was born the following afternoon.

  • They say if you're having contractions and you lay down and they go away, its not real labor.

  • These were not going away as I got up and layed down and changed posistions, which is why I thought they were the real deal. I talked to another mom about this today and she said she experienced the same thing for a week before her son was born, so I guess I still might have a little bit of a wait.

  • say hello to false labor...  true labor will not stop or slow down regardless of sleep, position, etc.
