I called the pedi's office today to ask about foods to avoid and also whether they would approve the use of Earth's Best organic formula (DS is currently on Similac but I was looking into ordering his formula online through Amazon Moms but unfortunately they dont offer that program for the Similac) and they also mentioned that if we wanted to we could move him up to the "next level formula" which I guess is for older babies? I wasn't familiar with this and didn't really get a chance to go into it with the nurse because we had to cover other topics. Does anyone know what this is about and what I should be looking for on the labels?
Re: "Next level up" formula for 9-12 months?
Most of the formula companies make toddler and intermediate formulas, but many pediatricians and nutritionists feel that they're just a marketing gimmick and a waste of money. I've compared the labels, and the toddler formulas are only slightly higher in just a handful of nutrients (mostly calcium and phosphorous). Most pediatricians recommend transitioning to whole cow's milk after 12 months, so if you're currently feeding formula and nutrient-dense baby foods and table foods, then there's no need to move up to an intermediate formula between now and then.
Our pediatrician doesn't bother with toddler or intermediate formulas. I'm making sure my LO gets the extra protein, healthy fats, and minerals he needs by feeding him eggs, meat, yogurt, avocado, whole grains, and colorful fruits and vegetables.
